Ped your first link didn't work. Is this what you were linking to?

Presidential Advance Manual

I'm somewhat torn on this type of policy. Mind you I skimmed to get the gist so if I am wrong just give me a shout out. I think the freedom of speech is unalienable but at the same time we must recognize that that just because we have that freedom it doesn't mean it is right to practice it anytime anywhere. I feel when the President of the United States is giving a speech he is conducting the business of the nation. It is not an open forum. Now, if the floor is opened up to questions and someone wants to ask hard questions (not make proclamations and accusations) then that is constructive. But then again, all presidents have used the friendly plants for those situations.

I feel the modern day protesters have no one but them selves to blame. Their past actions and behavior have made it nearly mandatory to screen audience members.

When was the last time a liberal protester had an idea to express?

Nigal: The thing is that the manual covers not only official visits but political and campaign visits. It describes how to keep all counter protestors invisible to the media and the president and gives such tips as making sure the people who are most visible are extremely supportive of the president. People have successfully sued for such things as being arrested for wearing T-shirts critical of the president and have sued for having their tickets rescinded because of the bumper stickers on their car.

I think the manual goes way over the line in stage managing public events.

Ah.... 'young republicans and local athletic teams' employed to strongarm the unfaithful, amid the continuous shouts of "USA! USA! USA!"

Gee, that sounds really familiar.

That other phrase was telling... 'if people are being used as a backdrop'.  I saw that again today for the umpteenth time:  Bush in Iraq using our servicemen and -women as props.  Disgusting.

Ped, this has been going on since Ceasar was in office. LOL! I'm not saying it isn't shady but it's simply reality. Reagan did it, Bush 1 did it, Clinton did it and the guy after Squinty McGee will do it.

Your self righteous indignation rings pretty hollow. Compare the White House plan to the Democrats election handbook. The Democrat's encourage lying, voter intimidation and fabricating irregularities. They treat the truth like a commodity.

"China's army hacks into Pentagon2007-9-4 10:29Washington - China's army hacked into a computer network at the Pentagon in an attack that has US officials concerned about the growing regularity and sophistication of China's technological assaults, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday.
Computer specialists with the People's Liberation Army (PLA) penetrated an unclassified network used by policy aides to US Defence Secretary Robert Gates in June, resulting in a weeklong shutdown of the system, the newspaper said in a report that quoted unnamed US officials.

"The PLA has demonstrated the ability to conduct attacks that disable our system ... and the ability in a conflict situation to re-enter and disrupt on a very large scale," a former official was quoted as saying by the Financial Times, adding that China's Army has also hacked into the networks of US defence companies and think tanks."

I have been a part of the "keeping the protestors out of sight" many times and can tell you that it's nothing unique to Bush, and it's mostly done out of common courtesy and respect for the office holder. There is a time and a place for protest. In fact, we've always encouraged people with different opinions to participate in Presidential events, but also ask for common decensy in the process. The point has always been to keep their vocalness out of earshot of the President (for respect for the fact that he's speaking, and he's the President), not out of earshot of the audience. Think of it this way, when somebody is an advance team for the President, they are basically the "hosts", and he is the "guest". It's their responsibility to see he's treated as a guest properly.

There are plenty of "proper" venues to express your opposing viewpoints.

I can also tell you the "rest" of the story - You need to keep in mind that almost all of the protest, t-shirt wearing people are extremely vocal and obnoxious to the point of disruption - that is typically their mission.

We've always considered the rights of the protestors - and we have always (even behind their backs) respected their desire to express their point of view and held no animosity towards them. That said, there is a time and a place for everything.

(this is from my personal experience - I am sure you can find an exception to the rule, but I've been a part of different advance teams and this has always been my experience)

You know these were things I have not seen that HAPPENED...but Tilty remembers when the former President (herein referred to as the GUILTY PARTY) was in Augusta?

Protest is not the issue here.

One more thing - for anybody thinking of protesting when the President speaks - I'd advise against it. The reason is, in every case that I've witnessed the protestor made a complete fool of themself. I can guarantee you that you won't change any minds your way and the audience will laugh at you. I don't know what happens - maybe it's the adreneline rush or something - but they always look like bumbling fools and quite pitiful.

You'll get much more "positive" attention if you stand outside and hold a sign peacefully and quietly.

"The manual was what drove the exclusion of the so-called Denver Three from a White House Social Security Forum in the city in March 2005. In that case, three people were tossed because they arrived in a car with a bumper sticker that said “No More Blood for Oil.” The three had tickets to attend and never demonstrated, but were removed from the public event before the president arrived."

Get with the program, Sargie.

This was a public event but the public wasn't actually invited.

Well we can't all be as open and "easy" as the last administration (LOL remember ?)

These historic photos first surfaced briefly during President Clinton's last reelection campaign. Just as quickly they vanished into the ether. In return for a $20,000 donation to the Democratic National Committee (part of which came from cocaine smuggled to the United States from Columbia according to Republican investigators), drug trafficker Jorge Cabrera was invited to dinner with Vice President Gore. A little over a week later, he was invited to a Christmas reception and met and posed with First Lady Hillary Clinton. According to the New York Times, April 4, 1997, at the time these photos were taken, Cabrera had two felony drug convictions. Since that time, he was arrested for smuggling 3 tons of cocaine into Florida. He pled guilty and was sentenced to 19 years in prison.

MarkO - I was much more respectful in my dress for the Senator than 99% of his supporters that were there.

In fact, 4 of us independently left the event due to feeling physically ill at the way his supporters were conducting themselves - that's no exagerration. We later met up and exchanged our feelings of disgust.

Yeah, maybe I did stand out.
