Steve Fossett Missing

“He left Monday morning in a private plane from a private airport in Nevada. No flight plan was filed. He expected to return by noon on Monday. Fuel was full. No contact with an emergency beacon and no radio contact. CAP is working with Naval and Air Force personnel to try and locate him.

Supposed he was looking for dry lake beds.”

There's a link. To my knowledge they have not yet confirmed a crash. Confirmed as in no wreckage has been found or crash site identified. At least it is not part of the newscasts I have read.”

Even if the plane locator failed, Fossett usually wears a Breitling Emergency watch that allows pilots to easily signal their location, said Granger Whitelaw, co-founder of the Rocket Racing League.

“2 lying campers to whom I had to give a refund. Then some parts went missing then a pitch fork seems to have disappeared. Nothing seemed to be going right so I retreated to my house to hide my head before it blew up!

The winds were really bad here today, I think we're getting some cast off from the hurricane. I wonder if some of those winds made it up there too.

Search area has been expanded to 10,000 square miles. There have been a couple of false locater signals chased down and ruled out. Wreckage was found but determined by ground inspection to be an older unmapped crash site. Still no sign of Fossett or the plane.”

“When I was working in the theater we were all set for a photo shoot with the cast. I had to be there to run the scenery changes for the show. The photographer never showed up. This was a professional photographer the theater had used for years. Waited and waited, he never showed. No one could find him. His studio hadn't heard from him. He just up and disappeared as far as anyone could tell. A year later or so he shows up to apologize for missing the shoot. He had decided to take a trip to Tahiti the night before. Seems his mind wasn't fully engaged in his life at the time.

So it does happen. But I would think Fossett would have too many options to disappear. He wouldn't need to abscond with someone else's plane. The plane is registered to the Flying M Ranch where he took off from. His own plane.... maybe I could see that. I get the impression he has too much integrity to steal another plane just to disappear.”

I don't think NASA ever found the crash site of the Mars Climate Orbiter. � I remember there was like a 10 megabyte TIFF of the most likely area you could download and try to help locate it ----- lotsa rocks!”

It surprises me sometimes to read these things, but this year they found another airplane from the WW II era in the Sierra... there's lot's of remote areas up there that we (we = hikers / backpackers) just don't get to! (that's one of the reasons why I LOVE the Sierra!)

The Vail Daily newspaper says Steve Fossett's family will have a memorial service to honor the missing adventurer on Thursday.

Fossett was last seen on Sept. 3 when his single-engine plane took off from an airstrip near Yerington. Search crews covered more than 20,000 square miles but never found him. A judge declared Fossett dead in February.

Thursday's service is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek, CO. Fossett and his wife Peggy lived in Beaver Creek part time.

The 63-year old Fossett was know for his dangerous adventures. He had circled the world in a balloon, plane and sailboat. He swam the English Channel and competed in the Iditarod Sled Dog Race.”

Unfortunately I think that someone has to be declared legally dead before all the insurance-related issues can be addressed, which is I'm guessing why she did that! :(

It still helps to deal with things emotionallly when you know FOR SURE that someone has passed because they found your body... I guess that's what I was thinking when I posted my comment about hoping they found him!”
