Republican senators to battle over Craig’s place on Approps

A battle is looming over the open Appropriations Committee seat that Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) will leave behind when he resigns following his disgrace in a police sex sting.

Appropriations seats are highly coveted, and competition to replace Craig, who has served on the panel for a decade, is likely to be heated within the Republican Conference. Still, the shocking chain of events that pushed Craig toward resignation less than a week after his June arrest was revealed may limit open campaigning for the committee slot.

Sen. Lamar Alexander (Tenn.) easily won the lone GOP Appropriations seat that became open at the start of this Congress, a valuable salve after Alexander lost a close leadership race to Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott (R-Miss.). Alexander’s assignment also silenced questions about whether the Tennessean would decline to run for reelection in 2008, meaning that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) could dangle an Appropriations seat before another Republican now considering retirement.”

Craig’s Daughter Faces Arrest Warrant

Embattled Sen. Larry Craig isn’t the only family member with legal woes.

There’s an arrest warrant for his daughter. The warrant was issued April 18, 2007, for Shae Suzanne Howell for contempt of court in connection with a charge of “unlawful entry and malicious injury to property,” according to the Ada County Sheriff’s Office in Idaho.

The Boise Guardian, an Idaho political blog, connected the dots after a reader recognized Howell, 36 years old, from her appearance this week on ABC’s “Good Morning America.” She and her brother Michael Craig took to the airwaves to defend their dad, who pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct in a police sex sting in a Minneapolis airport. The Ada County Sheriff’s office confirmed today that the warrant remains outstanding, but the exact circumstances of case were not immediately available. The bail is listed at $500.

UPDATE: “What we understand is that the warrant is a result of a dispute between Shae and her husband, who is now her ex-husband,” said Sidney Smith, a spokesman for Sen. Craig. “Charges were pressed against Shae by her husband and she missed her court date, so that’s where the warrant comes from.” Smith said Shae intends to pay the $500 bond and resolve the matter “as quickly as possible.”

Documents from the Fourth District Court in Idaho show that on June 19, 2006, Howell allegedly broke into David Howell’s home and destroyed unspecified photographs. According to the documents, Howell pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor counts of unlawful entry and malicious injury to property in December 2006, but failed to show up for a pre-trial conference in April 2007, which prompted the current arrest warrant for contempt of court.
