Osprey Atmos 50
I happen to fancy the Osprey packs...and I particarly like the Atmos 50, but I was wondering if any of you have this particular pack and if you've had any difficulties gettin all your gear in it for 3 or possibly more days.

My biggest concern is that my 20 degree TNF Cats Meow bag will take up too much room in the bottom of the bag.

If any one has this pack and or knows the bag I speak of, any light you could shed would be appreciated.

My current pack is a Womens Kelty Tornado which carries like 3800 cu. I think.

I have the Atmos 50 and the Cat's Meow. The pack was used on the AT in '05 and could handle my marmot helium, other essentials, 3-4 days of food, but not much more. The Meow takes up a lot more space than the Marmot helium. I think you'd have some trouble with that bag with your particular plans. However, I found the pack to be light, comfortable, durable and the ventilation system is great. I generally average around 23 lbs; up around 30 starting giving me some shoulder/back pain. Choose wisely.

This is backpack my favorite pack. I actually manage to put 3+ days into it -- including my Western Mountaineering Puma -20 degree bag.

I try to leave the tent at home or take the Akto ultralight when I use the pack, but it works either way -- just a little better without a tent.

A very comfortable pack to me. I feel almost nimble while hiking in this pack.

sounds like a GREAT excuse, i mean legitimate reason, to buy a super compressable, comfy and warm down bag. :)

Lucky you!

The Atmos 50 is my preferred pack for long distance hiking. Had 7 days of food in it at one point - it fit okay, but was slightly uncomfortable. I usually hovered around 25-28 pounds which was ideal for me. YMMV.

I have this pack too and love it. I hiked Yosemite last year which was 5 days with it and that's with a bear canister strapped on top. I didn't take it to Glacier this year but I wish I did. It's my preferred pack for any 2-3 day trip year round.

Mine too, but I'm thinking of the Aether for longer trips.

I think that pack would be too small for me. I have an Aether 60 that I can use for pretty much any trip out there. I also have an Aether 85 which I use to carry the kitchen sink.

I have this pack, among others, and it is my favorite so far. I have no trouble packing gear for a 3 day trip, including a Mountain Hardwear 15+ Phantom bag, which I usually strap on the outside of the pack. I keep the shelter small though, a Lightsabre Bivy or a Lunar Solo. I can get much more gear in this pack, because of the outside pockets, than in a Granite Gear Vapor Trail, which is about the same cubic inches. The only thing that goes inside the Atmos 50 are clothes, food and a Snow Peak Trek 700. I also find it comfortable at 25+ pounds and the ventilation system can't be beat in warm weather. Highly recommend the Atmos 50!

Hey thanks for the input. I might go ahead and upgrade the sleeping bag to something lighter and more compressable..and then save for this pack. I tried on a similar osprey pack with gear in it...and it was almost like having nothing on. It was really cool the way it felt.

I have one and it's very comfy. It is a bit tight packing it for 3 days, but the outside pockets and straps do help. One minor irritation is that I can't easily reach my Nalgenes, but I imagine if I used a bladder it would eat up even more space inside.

I just got the Atmos 40 and it looks great for 2-3 day trips, I think my Gregory will be spending alot more time hanging around the closet. I forgot how comfy, light and well made the ospreys are. Can't reach the water bottles for sure, but I just got a camelbak which is great, except it blocks the airflow up the back channel and makes the water warm.

Oh yeah, the best part was buying it from
Mountain Gear for $129 instead of $199 (and it's still on sale...how flippin' long do their sales last, anyhow?) It shipped from Spokane, so I had it in 2 days!

this is a little late but I'm considering this pack. http://www.rei.com/product/744915

sweetpea: I have the cats meow bag as well. the aura isn't larger on your body but would accomodate the meow.

REALLY want this PACK!! tried it on yesterday at REI and it took everything I had to leave without it!

I just got the Atmos 65 (red) and am really hoping to use it soon. But since you cursed me, causing us getting another 6-10 inches of snow tonight, it'll be a while yet.

just got the 50
used it on 20 mile thunder swamp trip last weekend. Not nearly as comfy as my Gregory, but almost 3 1/2 lbs lighter. I still haven't quite figured out what to pack in those odd shaped zip pockets on boths sides of the back. The compression system is a little different than my osprey stratos 40.
I like that one better, but can't fit all my stuff in it.

I love my Atmos 50...it's my preferred pack for long/longer distances. I like being able to organize more efficiently with the pockets. I also like the curved frame...it took some getting use to with packing, but I feel like my gear is more secure in this pack than my others.

I wouldn't recommend more than 30 pounds in it...I've had 33 on heavy resupply days and it was noticeably less comfortable (though still tolerable and not really uncomfortable).

cocohead ~ I use those pockets for a rain jacket, bandana, snacks, purifying tablets, etc. Things that I want easier access to.

Hey GathernoMoss, that is actually the pack I got. Its weird packing it, but I find that it really is quite large. Its easy to get all my winter gear in. I'm a little concerned that it'll be too spacious for me in the summer and that I might have been better off with the Atmos 50.

On a side note, I got the large cause I'm long torso-ed...it looks like it fits right...but I'm still not sure its sized right for me. ah wells. Its a great pack. A heck of a lot better than my old Kelty.

I referred to the Atmos 50..I mean Aura. THese packs are nifty.

You might also check out some pack Gregory makes thats very similar to the Osprey packs we're discussing here..>I think the womens version is called "Jade". It was a pretty cool pack and I found the cubic inches to be perfect--with the Osprey it seems like its either a little too spacious or a little too.....not spacious. lol.

sweetpea...I measure a 17 1/2 torso and typically the medium in anything works for me. However, with the aura the medium felt like I was wearing a kid's pack...I'm glad to know you experienced the same.

I may bite the bullet. Really liked that back meshing.

How does the Meow fit in the Aura? or did you go with a new bag too?

I know my lafuma will work...but my Meow...YOWza I love it..but good God its a fat one even compressed.

I've got the 50 and the Meow. Being synthetic, the Meow is a little bulky and doesn't compress well enough to fit in that pack and leave room for other stuff. I have another pack, I'll call it "George". for when I'm using the Cats Meow. My other bag, marmot helium, goes in the Atmos 50 first, stuffed free (no compression sack, but stuffed in a trash bag) so as to take up all the nooks and crannies of space. I do the same with my tarptents. I really like my Atmos 50 and have been thinking of picking up the 65 so I can carry a little more gear on longer hikes.

I think the Atmos 50 is just about perfect for thru hiking the AT, because you're hitting town so often and can resupply every 3-4 days. It's durable enough so long as you don't make a habit of using it as a chair and break one of those aluminum struts.

now thats a little nifty idea right there. I just use the bag the Meow came with. I did buy a compression bag and tried that route..but hello then it was just the size of a freakin basketball...which was even more aggrivating.

I'm leaving for a few days on the AT tomorrow. Just finished packing my pack but now THANKS to Nimble I think I'll repack that Meow. Love that bag..and Hate it all at the same time.

Hey MOSSY, I didn't have any problems getting my meow into the sleeping bag compartment of the Aura 65 in the compression sack (and my meow is a tall....) (yeah, I know, I need a new bag).

NOte: I can fit the meow into the bottom of my pack (the intererior of the bag..not talkin bout the sleeping bag compartment) ....and it fit ok, but it was horrible getting it out!)

I did actually buy a new bag when I got this pack, but its a 15 degree winter bag...not something Im gonna be using in spring/summer. lol. The sleeping bag compartment is actually big for the down bag.

Coco...yeah, I'll be usin the Osprey next weekend...its the only pack that even sorta fits me :) lol.

OH MOSSY, good to know the med. felt short to you. I've been agonizing about how my pack might be too long lol....

putting the sleeping bag in loose was a disaster for me. I don't know why. I am much more comfortable with the bag (in compression sack) strapped under the lid of the Gregory pack. Even when I put it in loose I felt like it filled the whole pack. I am thinking of loose stuffing the hammock though as it is a pain to compression sack. I guess I should have the snake skins if I am going to do that.

Packing it loose gives better space utilization. The trash bag is to keep it dry. Eventually the trash bags develop little holes and so I carry a few spares.
