Despite DNA Test, a Case is Retried

MACON, Miss., Aug. 31 — The scene in the tiny Noxubee County jail on a rainy afternoon has become almost commonplace. Kennedy Brewer, sentenced to death and locked up for 15 years for the rape and murder of a 3-year-old, was released on the strength of a DNA test showing that the semen in the rape kit was not his.

Virtually no effort has been made to find the man who raped the girl, Christine Jackson, and dumped her body in a creek in Noxubee County, one of the most rural in the state.

I think what's important is that they tried to convict someone. Try, try, try again.

In Mobile county, Alabama, one out of every 87 people has an STD -- a rate 3 times that of NYC and more than twice as high as Washington, D.C.

Isn't Alabama one of those states where public school students are taught "abstinence is the only protection against pregnancy, HIV/AIDs and STDs"????

Lesbian Teen Can Attend Offsite Prom
Prom Fight Was Worth It, Gay Teen Says
(CBS) A lesbian student in Mississippi who sued her school for the right to bring her girlfriend to the prom said she was sent to a fake prom instead.

Constance McMillen, 18, told The Advocate that last month's invitation to an alternate prom was a sham, saying that most students attended another dance organized by parents at a secret location.

"They had two proms and I was only invited to one of them," McMillen told the magazine. "The one that I went to had seven people there, and everyone went to the other one I wasn’t invited to."

"It hurts my feelings," she said.

Itawamba Agricultural High School cancelled its prom over the controversy sparked by McMillen's attempt to overturn the school's policy banning same-sex prom dates.

Las month, a federal judge ruled that the school district violated McMillen's constitutional rights, though did not reinstate the prom.

According to McMillen, the prom she attended was at a country club. She said of the five other students at the country club, two had learning disabilities.

"They had the time of their lives," McMillen said. "That's the one good thing that come out of this, [these kids] didn't have to worry about people making fun of them [at their prom]."

Really? Students have a constitutional right to a school-sponsored prom? Or is not being invited to a private party a violation of constitutional rights?

Oh well, at least they weren't a couple of those scumbag miscegenists.

Really? Students have a constitutional right to a school-sponsored prom?

they have a right to attend school functions as long as they are not being held out for disciplinary reasons

but the reason i posted this was not because of the ban (doesnt surprise me at all), but the PARENTS and kids that arranged a secret prom. teenagers are cruel, thats nothing new. for parents to do it, thats pretty douchey

the judge ruled that barring the student from the prom was unconstitutional. He said nothing about the secret and fake proms. that came after his ruling

that's pretty sad. i imagine the other kids were other "undesirables", like the 2 LD kids. what were the other kids? mexican? black? democrats? catholic? jewish? unitarian?

But Mississippi is the most religious state in the union. And as we both know, christians consider homosexuality immoral - for completely unfounded and idiotic reasons, but that's beside the point. In that context, is it really that "douchey" for the parents to shelter their kids from something they see as immoral?

Eventually christianity (most of it anyway) will realize it's wrong about homosexuality being immoral, just as they were wrong about miscegenation being immoral. But in the mean time, this is real to the parents, and I can kind of see where the resentment toward what they probably see as a pair of attention whores would reach the level where a secret prom makes sense. I don't agree with it, but I can see where the white-liberal stereotype that it's just blind bigotry by a bunch of dumbass rednecks misses the mark.

Sure is a great place to live if you've been convicted of murder!

Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour pardoned four convicted murderers who worked at the Governor's Mansion, releasing them from prison in the final days of his term in office, state officials said on Monday.

In all, Barbour pardoned four men convicted of murder and another convicted of burglary and robbery, all serving life sentences. In the executive orders Barbour signed, he wrote each "proved to be a diligent and dedicated workman."

The pardoned inmates included David Glenn Gatlin, who was denied parole in December on his conviction for shooting dead his estranged wife while she cradled their baby in 1993.

"He shot her in the head while she was holding a baby. He's a cold-blooded murderer," said Tiffany Ellis Brewer, the victim's sister.
