Anyone interested in doing a "New Year's Eve" weekend trip. I'm thinking 28th, 29th and 30th, Fri-Sun. We will still be home for new year's eve night, or we could extend it till the 1st and backpack in the new year.
Give me some feedback as to what you think and where you think would be a good place to have it.

Some where in the midwest. IN, KY, OH, IL are some thoughts.
I'm open to some suggestions!

I've never been there. That could be cool. Don't you have to stay in a campground there?

Are you talking about Garden of the Gods in Southern Illinois? I could do that one.

Pamela - Perhaps the Palm Springs Tramway? Or perhaps Joshua Tree? Actually I have never gotten away around New Years...too much family stuff going on. Perhaps a one day adventure or party.

Looks like Garden of the Gods is a good prospect. Any other suggestions?

Meangreen and I talked about this while checking out the Knobstone Trail.
We ended up thinking of three different places that would have enough trails to hike over the time period and would have the less likely interference from authorities.
Deam Wilderness, Red River Gorge and/or Land between the Lakes.
The only thing about RRG would be if there is snow on the ground, the trails might be a little dangerous to hike. The Deam and LBL would be easy trails to follow even if there is some snow on the ground.
Anyone have any other thoughts?

I guess I don't understand that reference.

Meaning, if we ended up with a large group, we wouldn't get in trouble for having too many tents in one area.
We thought about Mammoth Cave, but if we end up having a large group, we would have a problem of too many people. Being the time of year, there wouldn't be many backpackers out and we would be an easy target.

I think that sounds like fun. RRG has weird weather. When we were there last January it snowed on our way out. It was slick but not enough to use the crampons we brought. I think anyplace could be icy during that time and no matter which park, one should be ready for ice and snow. Old man's cave in OH would be fun to do at that time too. It's a car campground (think raging bonfires at night) but it has a huge group tent area, away from the rest of the campground, and the trails are right there. The caves and waterfalls would be gorgeous in winter!

Between the Rivers Trail looks like it would be a good one to do. I Like current river trail as well.

Well, I ran it by the hubby and he's not in favor of me going. Plus, my daughter will be home for the holidays, so I won't be able to do it.

Oh baby, What about Macinac Island for new years? It'd be cold but it'd be awesome. You can see the northern lights up there.

It's about a 10 hour drive straight north of my house. I would be willing to let any southerners stay over at my place and then car pool on north bright and early the next day if it would help.

If it were in Indiana do you think you might be interested in coming Rev? There is some talk about that too.

meangreen....

let me see if I can say this without sounding whiney or petulant or whatever.

I have no money. (I get paid like a missionary, which means no donations... no paycheck.) We have one car. I am limited by circumstances to places I can get to and from cheaply, easily or with ride shares. It is not "interest" I lack. It is ability.

I can totally understand that! I just thought Indy would make for a shorter drive than north MI. One of these days everything will fall into place and I'll get out east and get to meet all you fine people.
