Those statements are somewhat correct according to reports from the CDC. I say somewhat because they do need some interpretation.

The Heterosexual community is experiencing the fastest percentage growth of new infections in the US. However, percentage per capita the gay community has higher figures. The gay community is also experiencing an increase in new infections, but the raw numbers are lower than growth in the heterosexual population.

People with AIDS are living longer because of treatment. The death rate amongst the human race is still pegged at 100% but life expectancy for HIV+ and AIDS infected individuals is higher than it has been.”

This is _not_ correct. The spread of heterosexual HIV infection is largely due to prostitution. The highest increase in new infections is among women for a variety of reasons. The #&%!$ is easier to protect than the vaginal lining, particularly if the man is circumsized. The use of nonoxinol-9, the most common topical contraceptive compound, has been shown to cause sores and lesions in vaginal tissure allowing openings for the infection. Repeated exposure to a female carrier is more likely to infect the male. Therefore the elimination of anal receptive sex is not the sole criteria for stopping the heterosexual spread of the infection.

It is also possible to carry the virus and pass it on, without showing signs of, or developing full blown AIDS. AIDS is clinically described as having a T-cell count below a certain number and a viral load over a certain number. (I am not a clinician and I don't remember the specific numbers.) HIV+ is merely a designation that the virus is present is sufficient concentration to be detected.”

The data I find on the CDC website does not support this. Perhaps I am not looking in the right place.

Male-to-male sexual contact is 229,752. That includes the dual risk of male-to-male contact and Drug use. All other infections can be assumed to be non-male-to-male sexual contact. Because the homosexual transmission is singled out, it can be legitamately assumed the rest of the infections would fall into the heterosexual grouping. Looks pretty clear to me.”

I would say hiking with an HIV person would be minimal risk unless they tried to kill you.”
