From experience, there's a strong likelihood that he will bleed at some point, whether it's from thorns or falling or blisters or whatever. Can anyone comment on the precautions and advisability of hiking with said partner?” 8:42:05 AM 9/10/07 “1. Bring latex gloves in case you need to do 1st aid. 2. Don't make love to him.” 8:44:32 AM 9/10/07 “Don't lick the wounds” 8:45:26 AM 9/10/07 “i think he shouldn't hike with someone who's so paranoid. last edited: 9/10/07 8:35:56 AM” 8:47:11 AM 9/10/07 “Bring medical type of gloves. Latex, unless you are allergic to them, then the other kind. HIV is passed on from one open site to another open site. Don't mix your blood with his, or open skin and Don't have unprotected sex. As a nurse I have HIV patients many times. Read about how to protect yourself and follow that. Other than that, have a good time.” 8:56:50 AM 9/10/07 Jesus hates aids victims “This is God's punishment for an ungodly society. I know I wouldn't be associating - let alone hiking - with the damned. Jesus Saves.” 8:57:06 AM 9/10/07 “jesus hates mutt” 9:00:56 AM 9/10/07 mutt “grow up” 9:16:33 AM 9/10/07 “don't feed the trolls..... or the bears!” 9:30:59 AM 9/10/07 “I rarely bleed while hiking, but it seems that Nurse Ratschidt's advice is wise.” 9:34:52 AM 9/10/07 “i'm not really hungry right now anyway.” 9:39:59 AM 9/10/07 “stevebo had a good question and windigrrl gave a good answer. Gloves are a must. And not just for treating known HIV individuals, but for treating ANYONE where blood is involved. In the medical field you take precautions for everyone. HIV is NOT easy to catch. If it were, a much wider slice of society would have it. Bottom line: Hiking/driving/etc with a known HIV individual in not a significant risk.” 9:40:55 AM 9/10/07 “Oh yeah Windigrrl, I was just being a wise arse.” 9:49:35 AM 9/10/07 “Dang it people. I said bring the gloves first. Out-of-da-park!” 10:00:32 AM 9/10/07 “grow up - windgrrl Only if xtians grow up first and discard their silly little child's story.” 10:04:45 AM 9/10/07 “Sarge, are you saying "no glove, no love"? ;-) last edited: 9/10/07 9:53:58 AM” 10:05:32 AM 9/10/07 “it's relly not an hiv specific issue. use the same precautions you would for any pathogen carried in the blood. it's standard first aid these days as HIV is only one pathogen you can contract from an unknown or unaware person that has been injured.” 10:06:15 AM 9/10/07 “It is an HIV issue if you hesitate for a nanosecond to treat because of status. If so then I stand by what I said initially - don't hike with him.” 10:16:22 AM 9/10/07 “Don't share needles, play blood games, or have unprotected sex with him? Other than that, have a great hike.” 10:20:27 AM 9/10/07 “I would not hesitate to hike with someone HIV positive, but I do think the ethical thing for he to do is let his cohikers know of his status in case he is injured.” 10:21:25 AM 9/10/07 “And don't feed the flamers. Spindlette, tell me about these blood games....” 10:23:09 AM 9/10/07 “Don't you have enough kinks, MarkO?” 10:26:50 AM 9/10/07 “If the glove doesn't fit ... try the Magnums.” 10:27:20 AM 9/10/07 “What? Not licking the wound wasn't good advice?” 10:28:57 AM 9/10/07 “I lost my curly locks in February, Spindlette. They weren't exactly kinky.” 10:32:58 AM 9/10/07 “-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Jesus hates aids victims “This is God's punishment for an ungodly society. I know I wouldn't be associating - let alone hiking - with the damned. Jesus Saves.” Mutt Mutt...I'm really in no mood to put up with such an idiotic statement...!! You don't even know how this person became HIV positive!!!!” 10:34:55 AM 9/10/07 “This issue has not been raised yet. However it is something to keep track of. In my experience with HIV/AIDS carriers there can be a very sudden threshold between good functioning and severe exhaustion. The virus seems to affect stamina and endurance, at least , that has my experience. Keep an eye on your friend and make sure he does not get to the point of poor functioning. Admittedly that can be hard to discern in someone else. Bleeding from brambles and abrasions need not be your primary concern as those can be tended to by himself for the most part. A major injury is what would create the bigger threat. In addition... pack a small bottle of bleach as a precaution if it makes you feel better. last edited: 9/10/07 10:27:53 AM” 10:36:53 AM 9/10/07 “Ramblinrev, good point, but HIV is not the only cause of that. My stroke has really affected my endurace, and I bleed like a stuck pig from small cuts due to my Blood Thinners.” 10:44:49 AM 9/10/07 “Wow. "Homophobes On Parade" No surprise here, but grotesque just the same.” 10:53:09 AM 9/10/07 “Stovestomper.... I was not suggesting the HIV?AIDS was a sole cause. I have diabetes and it is a very small threshold where I can go from moving right along to being extremely unsteady. So I am sensitive to those issues. It can be one of those hidden risks the uninitiated do not recognize unless someone points it out. That was all I wanted to do. As far as other conditions are concerned, I think it is very important to assume that hidden frailties lurk every where and to be aware of those we are hiking with, particularly if they are not experienced hikers/campers. It just makes common sense to me.” 10:53:52 AM 9/10/07 ““Wow. "Homophobes On Parade" No surprise here, but grotesque just the same.” Tilt 1:53:09 PM 9/10/07 Except for the obvious troll, I don't see anything homophobic here. Assuming the guy is indeed gay, I hardly find going hiking for a week in the woods to be homophobic. Rather I think there is a legitimate question formed out of lack of of experience, not fear.” 10:57:05 AM 9/10/07 ““Wow. "Homophobes On Parade" No surprise here, but grotesque just the same.” Tilt 12:53:09 PM 9/10/07 ..and tilt has the nerve to say that with a straight face, LOL. Make sure the HIV guy isn't a Repubican. If he's Repubican, he's evil and someone to make fun of, just ask tilt.” 10:57:31 AM 9/10/07 “I had to checking and make sure this wasn't a fuego thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HINT HINT!!!” 10:58:40 AM 9/10/07 “I understand Rev, just wanted to make sure the bad readers didn't misunderstand. ;-)” 11:02:55 AM 9/10/07 “Tilt started it!” 11:03:05 AM 9/10/07 “Those blood thinners can be nasty if you get a cut. When I was on them, I cut my leg out in the garden and was surprised by how much bleeding there was. I started wondering what would happen if I took a hard crash riding my mountain bike on them and got some serious road rash. That would be ugly.” 11:03:51 AM 9/10/07 “tiltpoo started it, CG! ;-)” 11:03:51 AM 9/10/07 “One thing that has not been brought up, and probably would not be the case for someone hiking, is an individual on high levels of antibiotics is more apt to be a carrier of other drug-resistant pathogens. I would be more concerned over coughing (TB), but I doubt such an individual would feel up to backpacking.” 11:04:16 AM 9/10/07 ““I understand Rev, just wanted to make sure the bad readers didn't misunderstand. ;-)” StoveStomper 2:02:55 PM 9/10/07 heh... gotcha... I hadn't thought of that possibility. Good point.” 11:04:23 AM 9/10/07 “I do Rev. Wisecracks. Look again. Yep. Pretty #&%!$ing worthless if you ask me. And Look… The Usual Republican Flame Club. Like I’m SURE that’s only a coincidence. And if it’s not about Gays, where’s your MS Joke Thread? Your Lou Gehrig Joke Thread? How about popping over to the Beating Cancer thread for a few laughs? Disgusting.” 11:04:24 AM 9/10/07 “I guess I draw a distinction between tasteless humor and homophobia.” 11:07:35 AM 9/10/07 “Tilt, what are you rambling about? Check your meds.” 11:07:39 AM 9/10/07 “See? Tilt feels free to defend HIS homophopia. LOL "Homophobes On Parade", indeed. Check out any of the "Craig" threads tilt has started. last edited: 9/10/07 10:57:40 AM” 11:08:21 AM 9/10/07 “Sorry guys...I have to agree with Tilt on this one...yall are over the top! I guess I draw a distinction between tasteless humor and homophobia.” Ramblinrev 12:07:35 PM That is a VERY fine line and it is usually invisible on here.” 11:12:18 AM 9/10/07 “TT has 'tasteless humor'? There is another kind on TT? ;-)” 11:14:00 AM 9/10/07 ““Did you notice.... In his 'announcement' Larry specifically said that he wasn't Gay, and he had never been Gay. At no time did he state that he would not be Gay in the Future. [ guffaw ]”Tilt 10:21:20 AM 9/07/07” 11:14:13 AM 9/10/07 “One generates the other --- How about a Bible verse on the subject, Sarge? How about some wisecracks about stroke victims, Kevin?” 11:14:28 AM 9/10/07 “crazygurl, who did you just accuse of being homophobic?” 11:14:45 AM 9/10/07 “How about a Bible verse on the subject, Sarge? - tilt On what, HIV? or the topic you brought up, homophobia?” 11:16:00 AM 9/10/07 “How about some wisecracks about stroke victims, Kevin?” Tilt 1:14:28 PM 9/10/07 You, marko, and vile make enough of them for everyone. LOL” 11:16:44 AM 9/10/07
