Hey jerseynew--I took a fall today too--on a place I've been 1000times. I was laughing at all the acorns divebombing me, looked up and stepped on a congregation of the suckers-- and all of a sudden my feet rolled from under me.They got the last laugh! Fell hard on my knee, wrenched my back, sprained my wrist. Got some sweet bruises to show for it! BTW, Idaho, I live in MD, near Frederick.

i'm just glad you are safe. go to the Masten trip, have fun, meet everyone, learn as much as you can, do the AT in spring when your knee is all healed up. you can use this time to earn some more money, perhaps new LIGHTER gear?

That's a 5lb tent! Ok 4 and a half lbs...but that's still heavy.

Start saving and thinking about things in ounces...

jerseynewhiker...

Water is VERY heavy if you have to carry large quantities! (Something like 8 lbs a gallon)

My hubby (Thinkbubelz) and I were a bit paranoid about drinking water on our 1st backpacking trip--we carried several gallons each.... Not fun at all... We didn't have a filter at the time. This last trip, however, we were blessed to have a filter (given to us by a fellow TTer - Smiley Girl).... and let me tell you, drinking water that you pump yourself from a nice cold stream is pretty amazing!

BTW- the 1st time I ever put my fully loaded pack on I stepped onto the arctic tundra and immediately fell down face first... (luckily, it was soft, so I didn't get any injuries.)

I've had a knee injury before-- it took 6 months before I could even kneel on that knee and also several months before the water on the knee started to go away...so definitely get some physical therap y if you can and don't just rely on it healing without a little help.

I did find that walking did help a bit, but of course, that also depends upon the injury and what happened to your knee.... (Motrin was my friend for a long time-- took some at night before going to bed or else I would not be able to even move the knee in the morning....)

Glad to hear that you got out okay!!

ice and heat therapy on the knee is another good thing.

5 litres of water weighs just over 11 pounds.

there's no water where i backpack, so i know what it weighs.
