Seriously. Try this trek out in PA first. Less remote, and some of us might be able to pluck you off trail when you decide you've had enough.

Through early morning fog I see visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me I realize and I can see . . .
That suicide is painless it brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.

I try to find a way to make all our little joys relate
Without that ever-present hate but now I know that it’s too late,

and . . .That suicide is painless it brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.

The game of life is hard to play. I’m gonna lose it anyway.

The losing card I’ll someday lay so this is all I have to say.

That suicide is painless it brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.

The only way to win is cheat and lay it down before I’m beat,

and to another give my seat for that’s the only painless feat.

That suicide is painless it brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.

The sword of time will pierce our skins it doesn’t hurt when it begins

But as it works its way on in the pain grows stronger . . . watch it grin, but . . .
That suicide is painless it brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.

A brave man once requested me to answer questions that are key
'Is it to be or not to be' and I replied 'oh why ask me?'
That suicide is painless it brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.
And you can do the same thing if you choose.

One other thing you need to get used to is lonliness, you need to get a particular mindset to solo hike for that length of time.
Also remember that whichever direction you head you're going to have long long nights - I'd maybe try to scrounge up a small radio and some books.

A very small radio might not be a bad idea for weather reports if you can keep it dry.
Forget the books. Books are HEAVY.
You will only be interested in eating and then going to sleep after a long day on the trail. Very few thruhikers I've camped with have stayed up much after dark. Most start snoring right at dark.

You may happen to find something like that, but there's no guarantee. If you get into a town and let your needs be known, things have a way of working out. Often Hostel owners are very receptive to that kind of a deal. In my opinion you will find more trail magic and assistance going south vs. going north, especially once you get out of the mid-atlantic states. It seems a little scary to me that you would plan on depending on something like that. But, you're young and going hungry is good for the soul. lol.

two way radio maybe? don't they have running weather reports? this way it does double duty. of course, one that has the range he would really need, is out of his price range.

i guess simple transistor is all that he can afford

Hmmmm... I have no idea about work for stay, but you might find some good info at Whiteblaze.net about that. Also, I have heard that some hostels do this kind of thing. You might want to contact them ahead of time and arrange something. Many hostels are listed in the Thru-hiker Companion.

Measure the instant rice by cups, with at least one cup per meal. Try some freezer bag meals with rice, and bring ingredients for those recipes. Your food sounds pretty unappealing to me, so I hope you know what you are going to cook with it. Peas take a long time to cook, have you calculated how much fuel it will take with this stuff?

The food sounds like a shot in the dark, not planned in sufficient detail. Have you tested the recipes you are going to use? Way not enough protein.

hey guys, i'm sorry but i have to get up and go, i have an intake over at the V.A. to get my meds started there now that my health insurance is over. my topamax is almost finished and i'm trying to avoid a seizure.

Chris, you listen to these guys, a lot of them have more experience than i do, hell, probably most of them do. I've always listened and never come up wrong.

And you guys be nice to him, i've adopted him as one of my kiddos, another of my children of the heart.

One thing you may want to play around with is some more variety in your food. I know I get bored eating the same thing every day to the point that I stop eating it. Not a good thing when you need those calories to get you to the next stop on the trail.

I meant way not enough protein, and changed it to say that, apparently after your comment. The food looks scary. I think Les Stroud would be eating dead fish and worms after a week of this diet.

Yeah, lack of protein sticks out big time. Not much fat, either. Unless that bag of Trail mix is for 3 months?

And still no water purifier? I use 3-4L a day. You gonna collect all that or risk water sources on the AT...when you can find them?

The surviorman Les would eat worms and dead fish anyway...I watched him do it on a rerun last night.

Perhaps a weekend shakedown hike would be a good idea before you head out?

Pack what you think you want, and I'll take you for a hike on the NJ AT. You could get some of those miles done and see how it feels.

Then we can stop hazing the noob. ;)
