Gonna hit the river again the first weekend in October. Should be a good time. The Elk River is a nice and easy river with a gentle current...nice for relaxing and enjoying the scenery. The depth of the river averages around 3-5 feet. The water is regulated by a dam up stream so the flow is consistent and the water usually clear unless there's been a lot of recent rain.

Ya'll come....

Thanks for the e-mail Stew. Looks like these dates work well for me as well. Am sure it will be a great time as always.

Again I have plans for the weekend that you plan this trip. Too many trips just not enough tiem. I hope you have better water levels than we did in August. We (TTA) had to cancel again this year because of the drought. I went down it in June with family but it was pretty low then. But then we are paddling down river from Fayetteville, TN. so maybe ther will be more flow at Kelso.

Sorry to hear you can't go karo. Meet you sometime.

I have made various trips the last 3 out of 5 weeks down the Elk. Some from the dam to Farris Creek and some from Kelso to Chennault Ford and water levels have been adequate; although there are places that the weeds seem to be choking the river down some; guess this is due to the fact that they are not generating much if any. They are just letting enough water through to keep the river flowing.

Maybe enough to keep the trout alive.

Stew,

I just stumbled on to this float trip tonight. Where is the Elk River located in Tenn?

I can't get up there this weekend but if it is in Eastern or at least East of Nashville, I might get up there on another float trip.

The Elk River is located in south central Tenessee. We'll be floating down the river near Kelso, TN, which is were my buddy's canoe rental business is located.

I'm still planning on making this trip. I'm trying to get some newbies from the office to go with us but not sure if that will happen. If Bill Knox and I end up going alone then we'll decide on Saturday which leg of the river we want to paddle and we may end up camping along the river that night.

If we end up with some newbies then we'll take a short trip on Saturday with that group and have a bbq afterwards. Bill and I can paddle Sunday if he wants to...I'll camp overnight at the river regardless.

Yeah, I'm flying by the seat of my pants here. Bill, do you have any part of the river you want to try and float this weekend?

Stew,

However it works out will be fine with me.

If some of your coworkers go that would be great too. Always nice to have new people.

I still have my car packed for Mucklewain last weekend so if we decide to car camp on Saturday instead then I don't even have to unpack or repack. Just keep me posted.

Whichever part of the river you decide to float is ok with me as well.

I am looking forward to it.

I've got a few folks here at the office that want to come along. I'm telling everyone to get there between 10-11am. I'd like to be shuttling around 11am.

As of now, we'll float (about 4 hrs) back down to the Elk River Canoe parking area and camp on the river in their campground. They have a restroom there open all night. I'm bringing a bbq grill and fixings for burgers. I'll probably bring a salad or other sidedish too. I'll probably camp in my hennessy hammock. I haven't had time to cut any firewood though.

Bill, we can paddle on Sunday too if you wish...I'm wide open.
