When he was a 2nd Lt in that other disaster he led unauthorized "missions" across the DMZ to try to capture anyone of importance in an attempt to make a hero out of himself.
I'm not sure how many casualties he created in doing so but he didn't find any self-glorification though.”

“I'm not ready to give Bush that title. I think he's the worst in my lifetime and the biggest dissappointment (Carter was #2 in the disappointment category). I hoped he'd be like his Dad, not my cup of tea and with some different values - but a fundamentally sound, decent, intelligent and prudent President.

Here's three nominees for worst.

I still think Franklin Pierce was the worst. Among other things, he helped toss out the Missouri compromise (limitting slavery to southern states and territories). Having lived in New Hampshire, this makes me feel a little like I've betrayed the State (he was the only President from New Hampshire). I also feel badly for him because he had three kids and the only one that survived past five years was killed in a train crash in Massachusetts (Franklin was there at the time and saw it happen) during the time between his election and his inauguration. Imagine taking office not long after your only surviving kid is killed before your eyes!

James Buchanan who followed Pierce is a close second for me. Among other things he supposedly used personal influence with a Supreme Court judge to get the Dred Scott decision supporting slavery and limitting the Feds ability to prevent it from spreading.

I went to Wikipedia and saw that they list Harding as the worst president, beating out Pierce and Buchanan based on the average of a bunch of scholar surveys. I guess they chose him because of scandals and affairs, but having Pierce and Buchanan back to back set the stage for the Civil War. They were also part of a very ugly Democratic Party at the time and their collaboration with the pro-slavery forces was craven.

Carter was basically a decent person who was in over his head in a corrupt environment like Washington.  Then he inherited the blowback from decades of support for regimes like the Shah's.

What will the consequences be for the next generation if the lid blows off of Egypt and/or Saudi Arabia?  Republicans can only hope that it happens when a Democrat is in office.

The German judge rejected the request, arguing that the wife and her husband are both Muslims and the wife should have realized that the Koran allows a husband to chastise his wife.
