Maybe we can do a camping retreat sometime, or something... (please note- this is not fuego)” 1:34:45 PM 9/19/07 “Hmmm... Well for those who have not put it together, the "rev" is real in my trail name. But to be honest, not to dis on your idea Sarge, but one of the things I like about TT is getting out with folks who aren't Christian, if for no other reason than i can have a beer or two without having to wonder if it is going to come back and bite me. Jesus turned water into wine, and good wine at that, so I just don't get the mind set. But anyway.... I digress. So many "Christian" things are stodgey, stuffy and just plain not fun. So I am not sure I would be looking for the faith label when I sign up for a trip. Just my inout.” 1:47:09 PM 9/19/07 “Not a requirement, Rev. Just an idea for those that are interested. (btw, that's a pretty broad stroke you painted there - maybe you're hanging around the wrong crowd - I seriously doubt you're the only "cool" Christian, don't you, but maybe you're the coolest!!?) last edited: 9/19/07 1:49:32 PM” 1:49:43 PM 9/19/07 “I am a Christian by faith...and I swear Rev I really did think your name had something to do with a Rambler stuck in reverse....my bad (LOL)” 1:53:18 PM 9/19/07 “ygm Rev - btw, your ministry looks very interesting.” 1:55:37 PM 9/19/07 “I understand Rev's point though Sarge. There are so many who frown on adult beverages. Pastor had an AWESOME sermon on that a few months ago about how Jesus did turn water into wine and like you said Rev not the cheap stuff either...not just a little but A LOT. His point was where does the judment lie...in those that do and judge those that don't and vice versa. It is a matter of respect not judgement. It is a HUGE contravercy at my house! ANYWAY...there is no reason why it couldn't be a "Christian" retreat and it not be fun as well. Our church photography group just had a 'brew and view' meeting! :-)” 1:59:51 PM 9/19/07 “Sarge... sorry for the broad stroke. Maybe it's just the pastor experience, but my gosh I have seen so many people who are neat people by themselves just shut down and lose all their vitality when they get around others and start to feel "peer pressure" and all that. I don't mind the sign in... I think that's a nice bit of knowledge to have. But to post a trip under that banner... well... I guess it's not my style. But that's fine. I intended no offense. (But the worst of all of these are other pastors. ugh... but that's my own stuff.)” 2:05:40 PM 9/19/07 “Got it Rev. Understood. Hey, check your mail when you can. Thanks.” 2:10:33 PM 9/19/07 “Sarge ygm Crazygurl... you must not be Baptist... LOL last edited: 9/19/07 2:11:24 PM” 2:17:56 PM 9/19/07 “I can relate to the Rev. My father is a Pastor of his church. To make a long story short, when I was a kid up to about 9 y.o., we never went to church at all, then all of a sudden it was church 4-5 times a week. My Dad just went waaaaayyyyy overboard in my opinion. Now, everything you do is a sin, everything you eat is a sin, any music that is not gospel music is a sin, if you drink 2 beers a month it is a sin(and you have a drinking problem) if you miss one church service it is a sin.....I could keep going, but you get the point. There are a lot of other people out there who are the exact same way and I can only imagine what they would think or say if they found out a minister drank a beer.” 2:34:09 PM 9/19/07 “Hey all been a christian since 1998. As for the Beer and wine contraversy I`d say it`s cultral. In England christians drink like fish and think nothing of it. In Austria you can drink like a fish, and smoke but don`t you dare drink coffee. In Romania you can smoke and drink coffee but don`t you dare drink alcohol. It`s different every where,I`ll have the occascional beer, but not if it is going to offend someone or cause someone to stumble. Christianity is about a relationship with Jesus Christ, not a set of rules that say "do" or "don`t" if I wanted that I`d of converted to Judaism. Unfortunately today much of todays church is nothing more than Judaized christianity. last edited: 9/19/07 2:24:35 PM” 2:35:08 PM 9/19/07 “Christian here. I've had bourbon and coke with my minister on Bourbon Street in Pat O's before.” 2:40:43 PM 9/19/07 “If some of my friends knew I was hiking with some of the faith positions I hike with I would be flogged. hehehe Or at least told I was endangering my salvation by associating with "those kinds." last edited: 9/19/07 2:33:09 PM” 2:42:49 PM 9/19/07 “I'm a Christian and a Muslim and a Jew and a Hindu and a Buddhist and anything else that's out there. I just take what I like and leave the rest...or try to. The water into wine thing is cool; I think he may have smoked a little weed too:)” 2:44:30 PM 9/19/07 “Nimble - are you that kid from Life of Pi? He was a IslamicJewishChristian. rev - the folks that say that stuff tend to be the ones that forget who Jesus hung out with. I'm sure you'll attest to that.” 2:49:45 PM 9/19/07 Christians, sigh in “COUNT ME IN!!! I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Romans 1:16 That if thou confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Romans 10:9 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. St. John 3:5 AND DON'T FORGET THIS ONE, Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. II Timothy 3:12 Count it all JOY!!!!!!! Brothers and Sisters in CHRIST!!! WNCMAN” 2:51:53 PM 9/19/07 “I know nothing of the Life of Pi (and a lot of other topics as well). Personally, I'm for being accepting and tolerant of all religions...there's something to be learned from everyone. I don't know much about being saved, but feel that just believing (or saying you believe) something isn't going to get the job done. There's something about changed behavior as well. Who was it that said "Faith without works is dead"? Although raised Catholic, and for awhile sarcastically referring to myself as a "recovering Catholic", the foundation for my still developing spirituality was in 12 step programs. They are a lot more "functional" and less intellectual than any of the organized religions I have experience with. Although I have had little to no direct communication with people like Ramblinrev and Chappy, their posts strongly suggest that they try very hard walk as they talk. I have a lot of admiration and respect for both of them.” 2:59:17 PM 9/19/07 “WNCMAN, was that a mispelling of Wiccan? Just kidding; I'm not trying to go fuego.” 3:00:41 PM 9/19/07 “Love those who persecute you! Ha Ha Really though I got to go home now See ya later, WNCMAN” 3:02:55 PM 9/19/07 “Persecute: to pursue with harassing or oppressive treatment, esp. because of religion, race, or beliefs; harass persistently. Nimblefoot, you have been a bad monkey!” 3:10:52 PM 9/19/07 “No dessert tonight?” 3:21:45 PM 9/19/07 “You're lucky you don't get 40 years in the desert.” 3:26:45 PM 9/19/07 “ev - the folks that say that stuff tend to be the ones that forget who Jesus hung out with. I'm sure you'll attest to that.” dayhiker 5:49:45 PM 9/19/07 They remember that ok... they just don't think he should have been doing that.” 3:43:25 PM 9/19/07 “Rev, you can hang out with us, Jesus didn't stick only to the Pharisees...” 3:56:27 PM 9/19/07 “What is really a christain last edited: 9/19/07 3:46:14 PM” 3:56:47 PM 9/19/07 “It's what a girl named Chris left on the back seat of my '69 Charger.” 4:03:42 PM 9/19/07 ““What is really a christian Honestly someone who`s life reflects that of Jesus Christ. As christians we do make mistakes, what it comes down to is how much of our lives reflect his love as we live day to day.” 4:11:43 PM 9/19/07 ““What is really a christian Honestly someone who`s life reflects that of Jesus Christ. As christians we do make mistakes, what it comes down to is how much of our lives reflect his love as we live day to day.” - paddles Unfortunately, none of us can come close to reflecting the life of J.C., but as Christians, we're commanded to try. A Christian loves Christ enough to try, but ultimately knows we cannot meet His standard and acknowledges the price He paid for us on the cross. A Chr9stian accepts Him as Lord (who commands us), and Savior (of our sinful selves). We are called to "do", but ultimately need faith in Him.” 4:33:53 PM 9/19/07 “I suppose sometimes that reflection is through a dirty glass or one that tints the light an amber tone, but 'tis a reflection none the less.” 4:42:38 PM 9/19/07 “To be quite honest... the question "What is a Christian" is one that engenders a large amount of discussion even among those who claim the title.” 4:45:54 PM 9/19/07 “Marko you just cannot resist the temptation can ya?Gotta be the Yankee in ya!” 4:51:10 PM 9/19/07 “I have raised a dirty glass with the good RamblinRev........he's more a Yankee than I. And don't get me started on that Nimblefoot guy, he's so far north I'd probably need a translator. I am a light weight christian, and I certainly do respect you good folks.” 4:58:35 PM 9/19/07 5:00:01 PM 9/19/07 “Count me in! I would be interested in a backpacking trip with other Christians. There would have to be some rules though: 1. Don't be a stuffed shirt. 2. No holier than thou stuff. 3. You have to hoop and holler and have fun! P.S. I'm still trying to figure out the water into wine/drinking stuff. last edited: 9/19/07 4:52:26 PM” 5:05:08 PM 9/19/07 “It is told... amongst the Baptists at least, old man Welches was looking for a new market for his grape juice. He lobbied the powers that be to forsake the Biblically referenced "wine" in favor of unfermented grape juice in serving the Lord's Supper. Seems they read scripture to say that the wine was not really wine after all, just grape juice. So once old man Welches got his way in the Lord's Supper everything else just naturally followed. How true that is I don't know for sure. But I suspect it is fairly accurate.” 5:14:39 PM 9/19/07 “I think someone welched on the deal.” 5:27:43 PM 9/19/07 “Then I guess I email all the churches and tell them that should use generic grape juice from now on!” 5:29:56 PM 9/19/07 “Then I guess I email all the churches and tell them that should use generic grape juice from now on!” Spam 8:29:56 PM 9/19/07 That would be better than the grape kool-aid I have seen used at times.” 5:32:55 PM 9/19/07 “Speaking of, there is good evidence that the wine was actually not much stronger than generic grape juice, and many churches already do use that. "Good wine" was considered unfermented at the time, i.e., "grape juice". The wine Jesus made was most likely very weak wine by today's standards. Of course, Christians are prohibited from excess drinking anyways, so whether weak or strong, the point is not to get wasted.” 5:39:04 PM 9/19/07 “Rev I cannot say that I've ever seen that before. Here is a comment that was made to me by a very wise Christian man when I asked for his opinion on the subject. He said..." How would you feel if you were drunk when Jesus returned?"” 5:39:58 PM 9/19/07 “Religion Jews Don't recognize Christ as the Savior Protestants don't recognize the Pope as the head of the church Two Baptists won't recognize each other in a Liquor Store..... I am a Christian By Faith....Raised Methodist (that Church was referred to as God's Chosen Frozen) Catholic in College Episcopalian after College...left when the Church left me for the Brokeback Bishop. I am doing the Lutheran thing. last edited: 9/19/07 5:29:07 PM” 5:41:42 PM 9/19/07 “I would guess that in ancient times fermented drink was something that would not spoil and maybe a practical matter. Just a thought.... Though in times when people lived short miserable lives I'm sure getting at least a bit "out of one's mind" was desired too.” 5:48:01 PM 9/19/07 “I am in no way endorsing drunkenness... Let that be clearly understood. That stands right there with the "Hey... Hold my beer and watch this" thread. Having said that... unfermented wine does not burst wine skins. Nor does the steward of the wedding declare the wine "acceptable". He raves about it and declares it most excellent. I respect and acknowledge the difference of opinions on this issue, which is all the more reason that I enjoy being able have a beer or two without fear of offending one of my brothers or sisters in the faith. I can truthfully say I have not been drunk in over 30 years and that was before I came to faith. During my Pagan days I can not make such a claim. But it was the foolishness of drunkenness and not fear of sin that moved me to that position.” 5:49:16 PM 9/19/07 “Baptised at birth Presbytarian Raised Methodist drifted away for a few years Back to Methodist Married Catholic Rebaptised (actual salvation) Southern Baptist Current Evangelical Covenant Church I assume as I continue to grow I will continue to move. *edit Marko, you are correct(from what I have read) about the wine being a substitute for water due to health concern. Water wasnt fresh back in the day. That is a modern deal for sure. Also many other biblical prohibitions were along the same line, not eating pork and shellfish (poor sanitation and lack of refirgeration). Too much ado is made in many churches about this (alcohol) IMO. At the SBC church I taught at for 7 years the pastors wife once told me that if she had known I was a smoker (quit years ago) that she wouldnt have allowed her kids in my class (4of em). I kinda chuckled. Youd hear sermons on drinking, smoking, sex and drugs but never about gossip, gluttony (a biggy there) and other things. Blinders is all. I've had a beer with our youth pastor and still have yet to be struck down. last edited: 9/19/07 5:44:48 PM” 5:51:59 PM 9/19/07 “Well I must say that I am somewhat of a backslider but mostly on TT trips!” 5:53:42 PM 9/19/07 “Moving is always the goal ... He wants us to move closer to Him, no matter who you write your check out to.” 5:54:17 PM 9/19/07 “heh.... I am having difficulty coming with with a denomination I have not worshipped with at one time or another. Salvation Army was an interesting time. The poor Captain's wife was distraught when I grew a beard. Sure sign of my downhill descent to the bowels of iniquity. But she was a sweetheart and I think of them often.” 5:58:00 PM 9/19/07 “just make sure you dont cut the hair on the side of your head Ramblin, you'd be in deep kimchee then.” 6:00:23 PM 9/19/07 “Beards...........evil? Man, I am in big trouble.” 6:02:49 PM 9/19/07 “Yeah you long haired hippy!” 6:03:54 PM 9/19/07
