Let's see ... the Phillies joined the league in 1883 and the Mets in 1962. The Mets have won what, two World Series? and the Phillies just one.

Conk, you need another 79 years of this before you have a clue what Phillies fans have gone through.

1964 was just one manifestation. From 1939 to 1941, the Phillies had their three worst seasons of all time. One pitcher, Kirby Higbe, commented, "The fans don't boo us. they don't dare. We outnumber them."

I used to deliver the Evening Bulletin as a kid. I would turn the baseball standings upside-down to see what it would look like to see the Phillies in first place.

When the Mets came into existence in 1962, they were dubbed "lovable losers." By that time after 79 years the luster on lovable had tarnished for Phillies fans.

But look at it this way. Wags was gone from our pen for two years before he made a significant contribution to the team, so in two years maybe he'll help the Mets. It could happen!”
