Hey, I was just minding my own business.... doing a search for "Nathan Therm".... and that came up!        LOL

I do like the interface design of that application, though.  Just enter the quantity amd BAM.

Amazingly they didn't have a formula I need; the volume of a three dimensional octagon.

Like an 8-sided cylinder? The area of eight isosceles triangles (or 16 right triangles) times the height?

Or were you thinking of something more bizarre?   8-sided torus, maybe?     < G >

Yep, that's the shape of the pond. Got a formula for figuring the volume on that? I used to know it, from way way back when I took geology of all things. Maybe even in HS geometry, too.

Hey Tree if you send me the dims of that pond of your's I can get you the volume.
Don't ask me what the formula is..that's what I have AutoCad for :)

LMAO! Autocad to the rescue! Okay, I'll have to do some measurements. The bottom is graduated somewhat, so I'll really have to watch the accuracy.

Whadda ya mean 'graduated somewhat'?   < grrr >

L is the length of the long sides.
W is the width of the pond.

Ulp.

I took the average of the various depths to compute this. I hope I'm off on these measurements.

My end volume in gallons is 9322.9224

That's about 4.5k gallons more than I was aiming for. If this is correct, then I seriously have to add on to the filtration for this bad boy. I'll have happy fish though.

Maybe I just need to invest in a good flow meter. ;)
treebeast666

Is there a variation on this formula where I can use the known surface area to get the total volume? That'd be a lot easier since its not a regular hexagon. 2 sides are longer than the other 4.

I need to post new photos of this bad boy pond, too.

I'd be curious to see what AutoCad comes up with.... It's been a While since I've done any Trig (hence the disclaimers).

You mean "Little Stevie Wonder"?

Play yer harmonica, son!

That's a "made from scratch" type formula, < G >.  I don't know about you, but my algebra skills are a little rusty.

All that mess is, is a horizontal cross-section ('surface area') times the height.... or are you thinking of something else, like the area around the sides and bottom?

Whadda ya mean "graduated somewhat"??     < VBG >       That sucker's gotta have planar surfaces on all sides.      < G >       This is why mathematicans deal only in theoretical constructs!

Oh please, for a koi pond its small.

As far as a hexagon goes its 22 feet 1 inch long, by 14 feet 8 inches wide, with an average depth of 3.34 feet thus far. Make of it what you will. I thought I did the formula correctly but I don't know now.
