“She was complaining of "respiratory problems". Her room and her bed STINK. Apparently the family tries to help her but she is a pain in the tuckas.

Is there any thing the family can do "assistance wise" that I could mention?

It'd be tough to convince her to get help when she won't even allow the family to help her. If she can't afford home health care to come in Medicare will pay for it. If she is in an end of life situation the family can have Hospice come in and give care. Many of my own patients are simply elderly and their docs gave them the referral to help them. We've had some patients diagnosed with "failure the thrive" and have been on Hospice for over a year and sometimes two to three years.

In the end though if she refuses there isn't much the family can do. They would do well to get some type of social worker in there though because if someone less kind and helpful than yourself sees her condition they could turn them in for neglect which is a felony I believe.”

“XL, our next door neighbor was taking so many pain meds she shut her own kidneys down, twice. She wasn't feeding herself (or her cats), was up all night walking around talking and yelling, and was just generally in real trouble. Her nephew made one call to social services and she was committed, got cleaned up, her Dr's stopped prescribing the meds in six month scripts and she's much, much better and back at home. She had been asked and begged to go to the hospital and refused. When she was committed, she was a day away from death according to the Dr's. Her house had human waste all over, and she was so batty on her drugs she couldn't do much of anything but lay on the floor. The nephew was trying to be respectful of her wishes and almost let her die. It took neighbors stepping in and threatening him to get him off the pot. He ultimately saved her life.
Social Services didn't waste any time at all, thankfully.”
