burnout...
i have the livingroom floor covered in equipment (a lot of its new) ; while going thru it and setting up for a trip i realised i have zero enthusiasim for the whole process...
i'm seeing it as too much effort for too little return anymore the expense , the effort , the aggro , the whole thing seems to have outlived its day...
45 years ago it was fun , the woods weren't filled with idiots , violent treehuggers , vandals , methheads , dopers , illegals , and freaks like they are now...
you didn't have the gvt bloodsuckers with their hands out and their citationbooks ready to extract your lifesblood for breathing wrong...
i'm looking at the equipment (some of which i had when i started)and realising i may never use it again...
just too much effort for too little return...

what say you ? (esp. nigal)

i've been around here for years but lost all my login info in a browser meltdown , i just found the written copy tonight so figured i'd login and get your thoughts...

Illegals are OK. I smuggled 8 of them on a trip through GNP. They carried my food on their burros and I hid them in a tent when a Ranger came by. How they all got in that 2 person tent is indescribable. And they cooked and cleaned like nobody's business! They also brought along the best dope I ever had.

Viva Illegals!

maybe you should just quit altogether. you seem to have a negative attitude about the whole thing. i think i like the packsniffers better than listening to a burnout

Nevermind hunters that shoot at everything that moves outnumbering "violent treehuggers" about 10,000 to one.

Yep. Better sell it all.

what hunting ? there hasn't been any real hunting in kali for the last 20 years...
DFG has ruined it for everyone with their gross mismanagement of the deerherds...

Hang it up for a year or so.

Keep your gear, lest you regret it later.

I've heard that there are fewer people hunting than in past years.  Hunting is supposedly trending down, in general.  I know at least three guys that quit deer hunting because they said it just wasn't safe out there.

I was talking to a guy I met on a local trail last Fall and out of the blue he said he buried his brother the week before.  He'd got into an argument with another guy over a hunting spot and they went at it with their deer rifles.

I always check when the season is when I'm planning a trip to a National Forest here in the Southeast           < wink >

what say you ? (esp. nigal)

So why does my name come up on a burnout thread? LOL!

it doesn't sound like your burned out on hiking but burned out on people. When I read the list of reasons hiking doesn't thrill you I thought, "Damn! Where's this guy hiking?". Then I saw it was California. "Oh OK.".

Sounds like you may have forgotten what you love about hiking. List all those reasons for us and then list places that you go to get those things. Try changing up the gear to the simplest barest kit you can put together. One of my favorite trips was a solo with a 7 pound pack.

California is beautiful man! You have so much there in the way of hiking that I think you may have forgotten how great it really is there. But in the end if ya just don't wanna do it, then don't do it. Find something else that makes ya happy.

OK, five cents please.

Funny but....I rarely see anyone during my NCT hikes. Also, by cutting weight and down sizing my Gear, (meaning carrying less crap), it has made packing and hiking much more enjoyable, and less of a chore, at least for myself anyway.

How much for all your stuff? I'm just kidding! Well, kinda.

I understand because I remember a time when I said that my family would have to be hungry before I would sell my Harleys but I just reached a point when there wasn't a point anymore and sold out! That was about 12 years ago and as soon as I get my youngin through college I might go at it again.

Doesn't sound like burnout on hiking to me. If you've been hiking and in the wilderness for 45+ years it's not something you do it is a part of who you are. sounds like depression, anger at someone or something, and loneliness. I agree with jackstraw--Masten might help! Don't sell your stuff. Keep the essentials, you'll be back out there. Give the rest away as a gift to someone who can't afford it but is dying to experience the outdoors. Their joy will be contagious and you will get a bit of your own back.

Become a hunter, become a rock climber, become a policeman, become a sailor, become a bookreader, become a volunteer at nursing home, or a employee of one. If the old hobby sucks to you now, so what, move on.

Find someplace you want to go, maybe Australia, Alaska, Some far off national park and plan it. If you can't get excited in the process then don't go, store your stuff and wait for the desire to go again. You don't have to do everything forever. I used to love to tap dance. Haven't done it for 17 years. I have been thinking about getting a pair of tap shoes lately. Sometimes you just need a good, long break.

Feeling burned out? Lack of enthusiasem, even for the most enjoyable things? No motivation for nothing? Just want to stay home? Feeling sad?

...mmmmmm, maybe you're just depressed? You sound depressed. Maybe check your medication? Or better, stay away from medication, instead have some chocolate and a cup of coffee, sit down, relax and spent time daydreaming....

There's a LOT of places to go where there aren't any or many people around. I avoid the trails because there you run into people like TTers - trashy, obnoxious suburbanite types.

But that doesn't help you on your other gripes, though.

just a realisation what a ***hole this state has become...

dope growers are everywhere , lots of boobytraps , they hang fishhooks at eyelevel on trails , punji pits , tripwires , toepoppers , all those fun kinda things ... (ex VN vets?)

you can't leave a car anywhere , methlabs up the wazoo , insane regs , overzealous badgeboobs , on and on...

it used to be a nice place to live (50 yrs ago)no more...

anyway , i will probably sell off all but the most basic gear , i've needed to do that for years anyway...

and ridgerunner went with it.....

I found that having 20 Sleeping Bags, 15 tents, and 10 backpacks was a hoot for a while, but it got tedious to keep it all and those are just the LARGE items...Stoves, headlamps, water bottles, camelbacks, tarps, sleeping pads, all the other stuff in multiples I had were making the simple act of packing a nightmare....so I gave it away.

Well, MOST of it anyway...presents to friends, to friends of friends, and the only criteria was that the person who got it would USE it, not just stuff it onto a shelf like I had......

While I kayak camp more than hike now, it's all a lot simpler with the choices restricted to one of three. (that's the limit i set for myself...three of an item...if I get a new one now, an old one has to go, and I'm sticking to it.

come to Colorado.... I've been on three trips this year of at least two nights each and seen no more than 5 people in the wilderness combined.

You just gotta know where to go.

Idaho and Montana would offer the same level of available solitude - if that's what your looking for.

My advice is the opposite - get out there. Once you're in the mountains, you'll remember why you like backpacking. All the petty worries and complaints about the state of the world will vanish. You'll be back to thinking about what really matters: "what's for dinner?"

RR, you just need to head up to Northern CA, and then stay off the touron-infested trails around the tourist hot-spots, you poor thing!

Ever been to Shasta-Trinity Nat'l Forest? How about the Trinity Alps? There are more places to hike in CA than is imaginable. They just found another plane that crashed in the Sierra back in WW II, that's over 50 years ago! Of course, it wasn't on the JMT, that's the point - you need to get off the main tourist-trails and into the wilderness!

You're in Northern CA? That's a shocker... where at? Where do you usually go hiking?
Northern CA is where I live / hike, I couldn't relate to any of the below?

idiots (idiots are everywhere - has nothing to do with backpacking!)

violent treehuggers (never saw one - where did you?)

vandals (at any trailhead close to civilization that's a possibility, why don't you try going to trailheads "off the beaten path", I've never encountered a problem!

methheads (How do you know? Where do you see them? I can't imagine a druggie being a backpacker!

dopers (Again, how do you know? again, I can't imagine a doper being a backpacker?

illegals (How do you kniow who is or isn't illegal? For the record, I've seen very few folks that appear to be of strong Mexican heritage out on the trails... doesn't appear to be something they enjoy, I think it's probably a cultural thing, just like you see very few African-American's in the backcountry?

freaks (What's a freak in your opinion? How do you know who is a freak?

I'm leaning toward agreeing with the comments a few others have posted above, I think you're having a bad day! Hope it gets better, and, if you want to hook up for a hike send me an email.

Don't be a copout!

I'm busy backpacking in GSMNP doing some conditioning before cardiac rehab.

Gotta get back to the trail.

BTW, I'm 75, badly in need of new knees, have 5 bypases and, recently, received a defibrillator. Now, get your fanny out here.

WTF? If you haven't ever participated in a TT trip, you hardly can judge it as such. Even on an easy kid-friendly hike, I can't think of a single one-night to week-long TT trip I have taken where any trails were that polished.

Use your energy to improve your outlook as opposed to bashing everyone else and our hobby.
