Peak1 Model 400 Coleman “Guys, I have an older Coleman Peak1 Model 400. This stove has the high low adjustment. OK, I have tried several times to find out if a rebuild kit can be had. Coleman of course is of no help, they never respond. All the stores in my area sale new parts for new stoves like the 400B and this kit only partly will work. OK the problem may not require a kit so here is the problem. When I light the stove it burns perfectly. None of the adjustments appear to leak. Carrying the stove it has never leaked. However when the stove is 1st lit a very small amount of fuel appears on the tank. This is dangerous, I have already had it to catch fire when the wind was blowing down on the tank and it melted the adjustment red knob on the off and on before I got it out. After the stove burns a few minutes this fuel on the tank goes away. I have looked and can not see where this leak is happening from. It appears to come from underneath the burn assembly. I can't see because of the covers. Can I remove these covers safely without causing damages to the stove? I would love to obtain some sort of manual however I haven't been able too. Can anyone advise me how to cure this problem if at all. All the seals in the adjustment arms and the pump all are in great shape. Any help would be appreciated...” 7:09:32 PM 10/24/07 “Sounds like an o-ring in the fuel valve. That's the one with the red knob on it that you mentioned. If you take this apart there is an o-ring that gets dried out and will leak when you first open it up. If you are handy you can loosen the jam nut and pull this assembly out and lubricate it with some fuel pump grease or petroleum jelly. Should solve the problem. Can't believe you can't get someone to talk to because I have never had a problem with them. I ignore all autoprompt menus on phones and wait for a real person to pick up or punch 0 repeatedly.” 6:24:34 PM 10/25/07 Ebay has it ALL!!! 6:36:42 PM 10/25/07 “I should get that book. I was hoping someone would answer up and break down the theory of operation for these stoves. I took mine apart a few years after buying it because I kept reading in Backpacker magazine that they should be cleaned. It never worked as well after putting it back together. It has flared up countless times and I'm not sure what causes it. Most of the time it works good. You can get maintenance kits all over the internet. I've replaced all the parts in the kit but usually just have to vasoline the plunger. Mine is 14 yrs old and gets used when I can't get into the city for Snow Peak fuel.” 9:06:05 PM 10/25/07 “I have a '79 model that still runs when I decide to pull it out. They do not like to be stored with fuel in them so I haven't fired it up in quite a while.” 3:12:01 PM 10/26/07 Book “If I win the book, I'll copy it for anyone who wants a copy! I took it apart (got brave) and cleaned and oiled all the "O"rings and even removed the burner cleaned it. It works perfectly now! No leaks under the burner! The book would be an real asset! After taking it apart. My guess if it's flaring it's because the burner is to tight or it is out of alignment. Now By no means am I an expert, but I noticed when removing the burner it was in a certain order and I also noticed you could compress those rings when putting to much pressure on them. So, I would look at another stove and make sure you haven't over tightened the burner screw. I would also make sure you have them in the correct order. You might also want to check the jet. I Think that was actually my problem it was dirty and I used an air compressor to blow it out several times. It hasn't leaked a drop of fuel under the burner since! By no means am I an expert but I am pretty handy around the shop when I get brave!” 4:45:27 PM 10/26/07 “rather than bid against you I may just take a copy if you win! Now that I've read this thread it brought to mind a friend of mine who has this exact stove and they take it everytime I'm on a trip with them. Last trip I was in charge of cooking and the thing was leaking as you describe...plus no matter what they did they couldn't prime it. Eventually it did prime but there was a whole lot of cussin involved! That book may very well save more lives than yours :D” 6:43:27 PM 10/26/07 book “If I win the book I will scan it and stick a copy up for email to anyone who needs a copy. I didn't stick a big bid on it so I might not win. Wish me luck! As for the stove giving problems. Just try cleaning the jet and make sure the insulation is still good under the burner and isn't touching or blocking the jet. I really think that was my issue, not sure but funny after I cleaned it I was in business. The burner itself may be trashed up so take a peek at that. As I say that thing is in a certain order and isn't really tightened down a lot.” 8:39:05 AM 10/27/07 “holy smokes sticks, tht thing is as old as I am!!!” 8:54:29 AM 10/27/07 book “Seems I won the auction for the booklet! As soon as I get it, I'll copy it and advise everyone it's ready to be emailed. These Stoves maybe Old but sometimes OLD is good. In the case of this little stove it's one of the best I have ever used. Well made and as you say it's old so they have been tried by time!” 9:06:54 AM 10/28/07 “send me a copy. my addy is in my profile.” 5:42:08 PM 10/28/07 “I have a 400 as well. I would like a copy. Addy is in my profile. Thanks” 5:48:34 PM 10/28/07 “Success!!!!...addy is in my profile too” 5:49:30 PM 10/28/07 “Dittos about the e-mail address. Thanks in advance! SC - I could be your daddy.” 5:07:12 AM 10/29/07
