I think scat is cool...as long as it isn't from a pet, pal or farm animal!

If you want to see what makes that scat, click on my profile and view the summer '06 album. For some reason, the wolf scat around here seems to have a lot of gortex fibers in it. Tourists from Illinois?

holla! Great pictures coming in.

About the ibex - I know a few places where it is almost sure to run into them. Ibex have been hunted to near extinction in the alps. A tiny population surived in the italian alps. The king protected those last ibex, but only because so that he and his noble friends and guests could keep hunting them. The swiss, after having killed all their ibex, badly wanted to have some of the kings ibex, to reintroduce them into their alps, but the king wouldn't give any of his precious ibex. So swiss poachers 'stole' young ibex, raised them, bred them and finaly set them free in the swiss alps. That happened a hundred years ago or so. Ever since the small population of ibex has been thriving and they are roamning parts of the alps where they have been extinct.
Nice story isn't it?
They are still strictly protected and because they don't need to fear man it's often possible to get as close as a couple of meters. They won't even stop grazing or look up when crowds of tourist stop and take pictures.

Chamois. It's a lot more difficult to watch chamois as they need to fear man. Chamois are hunted as game. I know one place though where they are protected and thus less shy of mans presence.

Two years ago, in late spring, I went on a hike with a friend. It was the first really warm and sunny day, after a long, cold winter. The trail was high up on the south facing side of a valley and so we could enjoy the warm sunlight.
I was walking down a couple of steps when I noticed something lying on the trail. I looked down…looked again…and shrieked like hell, running backwards into my friend.
This is what I saw…

The snake was there, right in the middle of the trail, with a mouse stuck in her mouth. The little viper was totally helpless in this awkward position. It couldn’t escape, it couldn’t fight back. Despite us standing over it and walking around it, the little snake was desperate to keep its prey. It may have been its very first meal after starving through month of hibernation. This meal might make all the difference between life and death now. The scared snake tried to retread backwards as fast as it could, but with the mouse between its jaws it was just too slow to flee. As we took photos and watched, the snake regurgitated the mouse, abandoning its precious prey. The moment the hungry snake was turning away though, the tip of its tail touched a crack between the rocks. Quickly it turned, snapped the dead mouse and pulled itself and the mouse backwards into the rock hole as fast as it could.
I was glad the little viper got its meal. I hope it had a feast down there in its burrow.
