MSR's New Filter
I had the urge to drive to as many gear shops I could get to in a full day and come across some information at 2 different gear shops. MSR'S new water filter. NOT being sold yet.........but the owners of the gear shops both said they have seen it at a Gear show this year and will be on the market soon........Any Body got any other information???
I was told this filter will revolutionize water filters.....just what I was told. Supposed to be a first of it's kind on the market......not a ceramic filter but made with tubes.........just what both gear shop owners told me..........also it is much smaller in size.........and faster water volume.......I went to the MSR web site and found no Info........any hooooooooo any one know anything??

I have been told by NOLS and several Alaskan residents who uses electric bear fences, that the Grizzly has such a keen nose that it is believed they smell the charge and never touch the fence.

Like you I am watching the results from the SIBBG and IGBC.

as far as i am concerned... if msr makes it it will be heavy, overpriced, and have questionable reliability. i used to be a big msr fan but they have gone to the dark side since they created that awful MIOX (which they also said was a revolution water treatment... which it was... as far as cost vs hype). reality is they haven't had an original idea as long as i have known them.

thank you Jimmy san for your input. I will say i have used MSR filters with no problem for the last 10 years now. Never once have I had bad water or service problems with my Mini Works. I average approx 30 bag night a year and lately I have been using the same filter I purchased 10 years ago filtering water for 4 to 6 people at a time.
I have the original Mini Works that came with the slower filter and have since then upgraded to the ex filter. Yes it does weigh more than the chemicals out there. Every one I have been with using the chemicals in silty conditions have ended up using my filter with clear clean results while there water may be okay to drink after several minutes or maybe 30 or more. I'm not saying chemicals have to merit, I use MicroPur tablets in the winter time and know the advantages of chemicals. I will no doubt take the MSR over any other.
I own all of the MSR stoves they have made in the last 14 years and own 4 water filters and have seen MSR gear with the majority of backpackers I have hiked with here on TT, I may have some stock in the company.I need to check with my broker............
At Trail Days MSR will clean, service and repair your gear free. I have never had a problem with there service and never had there gear fail me.

I agree with Jimmysan on the MIOX.........I do not have this system but have seen it used in the field and I don't like it. If you have the MIOX and it works for you , then use it. I have always believed in backpacking with my own gear since I am carry it and using it.

Maintenace I have been told is easier than there typical ceramic filters. While in Hot Springs NC at the outfitter store they said no maintenance at all. Kinda don't believe that until I get my hands on it.

MSR was a good company before being bought by Cascade Designs which has excellent customer service. I have found that MSR only got better after this merge.

The Miox was just another failed piece of gear that worked great in the lab but sucked nuts in the field. We all have examples laying around our gear closets.

I am looking at this as a possible birthday present...to myself.

what kinda system is this? ceramic? chemical? how can it possibly pump/filter that fast!?

i have the miniworks and it's a terrible filter. it works great -if- you have clear, clean water to start with (example: lake michigan). use it in water with any tannin in it or water else and it clogs before a fraction of a liter is pumped. the filter has to constantly be scrubbed. i have seen people pumping away with the thing "sqeaking" saying, "gee, i think it needs more lube" which is pathetic because the squeaking is a check valve that pumps the water back out when the pressure gets too high (i.e. it is clogged and needs to be cleaned). i think one of the main reasons that people buy this thing is that it mates to the top of a nalgenene water bottle. i finally gave up on this filter because up in wisconsin the water generally has a lot of tannin in it and the filter couldn't go 1/4 liter without having to be broken down and scrubbed. the lifetime of the filter under these conditions is FAR less than advertised.

my other gripe with msr is with their customer service, which is simply terrible. when i called with questions about my MIOX, a terribly product, they treated me like a total moron... basically if it didn't work properly then it was "user error". i am perfectly willing to admit when i have made an error, and i was VERY polite with the people on the phone, but to imply that i am unable to rtfm and follow instructions is absurd. any company that uses "blame the user" as their first line of defense and "blame the user" as their second like after the user has proven more advanced than most doesn't deserve my money.

...so basically here is where i stand with MSR. i bought the MIOX for something like 100 bucks and until i am satisfied i have taken a pass on enough of their crappy products that i have denied them at least $100 in business i won't even consider giving them another dime.

the -only- piece of gear i own of theirs i like is that msr hubba tent which is heavy and cumbersome (hardly fit for backpacking) but a great first-night car-camping tent. their advertising it as an ultralight backpacking tent (it weights over 3 lbs for crying out loud!) is utterly absurd. great tent but proof-positive that the marketing pukes have taken over that company.

yeah, i admit i go at it a bit hard when it comes to msr. it's just my opinion. 'fridge loves them to death and buys anything they make (at least i recall a post that i thought said this). the wonderful thing about the outdoors is that there are so many different vectors from which you can approach it and all of them are valid.

msr kept falling back on, "well the military uses it so you must not be doing it right". well the military uses a lot of things i don't use when backpacking (claymores, bayonets, stun grenades, kevlar body armor, etc) so just because the military uses something doesn't mean it's will work for my application. also, i would like to know precisely where and to what extent the military actually uses the thing. i don't know that i believe their claim. it's like mcdonalds... "chocolaty chip cookies" or "cherry pie"... it doesn't say "chocolate chip cookies" (cause they contain no chocolate) or "cherries pie" (there is generally only one cherry in each pie if that much). i hate marketing.

I wouldn't mind taking a look at it. I'm still not sold on it yet without seeing how it preforms in the field. I've had problems with the Mini Works if there was any amount of silt in the water. One trip it took half an hour to filter 3L of water from a high mountain pond which was the only water source for about 5 miles.

I wonder how this new filter would attach to a platypus.
lumberzac

lumberzac I have some of the same reservations...........With silty water I use a water bucket weight 3 oz.........draw water from the source and let this bucket set until the silt settles.
In Alaska the Glacier fed creeks, rivers are quite silty and this method is what was reommended by everyone I have spoken to in Alaska.
Just saying this method has worked for me and those who have backpacked with me has seen my set up. I always have 5 liters of water with me at CAMP.

like i said, the miniworks does a fine job if you have clean, clear water to begin with. anything else forget it. tannins do it awful as does any water with algae in it. you can "settle out" tannins or algae but both are harmelss.

I have been very happy with my Hiker Pro, but this filter looks too good to be true. I guess I will just have to see what people think about it in the field.

I agree with you Jimmy san, the MIOX was a POS.

surprised by this comment
"MSR has long been a leader in the water filter market ...

I guess their basing that on their numbers sold. When it comes to functionality they have always been characterized by a mixed bag of reviews.

I hope this product lives up to its billing. For years I've had confidence and enjoyed every item I've purchased from MSR, except their filters. Of course, I thought the MiniWorks was good until given the chance to compare it with the Hiker.

I'm not super strong, but I don't mind carrying around a tent that's somewhat over three pounds. I remember just 7-8 years ago when I got into backpacking three pounds was considered an ultralight tent.

Mocs123

the hubba hubba weighs 3 lbs 14 oz "minimum weight" whatever that is...

if it weighed 14 oz less it would weight 3 lbs.

if it weighed 2 oz more it would weigh 4 lbs.

...it's closer to 4 lbs than it is to 3.

this is msr for you... msr stands for "marketing science research"

"packed weight" for this tent is 4 lbs 12 oz... almost 5 lbs.

I'll look at this but probably stick to Aqua Mira, a little bleach and a piece of fleece or banadana to screen out the nasties. Very light, compact, you have to wait 15-30 minutes but so what. I've used this combo for a few years and never gotton sick, and water tastes fine.
