I hope I'll be fit(ter) by then. The X-rays and MRI's have been done on my knees and I should have both knees done before the end of the winter. Sounds like a fun hike.

I probably can't get a big hunk of time off in September.... but maybe I can join you for a few days and help you with resupply (like MarkO and Henry did for my first LT hike).

It would be cool hike it with other folks for trip #3.

It would be nice to hike the rest of the trail (Brandon Gap - South). I'll keep an eye on things as the date gets closer.

.....or I could join Zac for some of the southern part that I haven't done.

Ped, when did you do #2?
(out of context, here we come)

I have to say most of the privies along the trail were in good shape and I didn't mind doing #2 in most of them.

Grade school puns aside, I hiked the LT, South to North this summer. I sent you an email asking if you were interested in doing a little of it this year.

i absolutely loved the section from the mass border(so long, mass-holes!) to the maine junction. everyone who has done it has said the rest is even better (More rugged, more views)

The northern section is regged as hell, but worth it. Great trail

More places to stop and swim in the south, but definitely more rugged and more wild in the North.

Aside from being more rugged the feel changes when you get North of the AT and all those people in a hurry to get to Katahdin (or Springer).

i had several days on the AT over 20. the only way ill do more than 10 or 12 in a day on the lt is if i get behind schedule

Good plan. When I did the northern half we were averaging a little more than 14 miles a day and I ended up running on fumes the day we went over Mansfield.

That trail beat me up more than the Presidential Range even thought about.

Averaging 9-10 a day seems like an ideal pace to me. I'd love to have 30 days to do it. I did it in 19 with a day off this year and had a good time, but I'm thinking if I can't get four weeks off maybe I should section it instead of going for the whole thing.

hey, pedxing, or anyone else who might know, how did you get to/from the northern terminus?

You bum a ride. If you are lucky you can get a free shuttle from a kind soul on the "pay it forward" model. Apple Acres Farms (802-988-4300 or roseappleacres.com)and some others do paid shuttles. There are a couple other places - at least one more lsited in the E2E and some you will find on trailforums.com. Hitch-hiking is going to be tough - you are kind of counting on your last ride to be willing to go out of the way.

If you hitch, I'm told it makes more sense to hitch to or from the Rt. 105 trail head (still a hard hitch, but easier that getting to Journey's End) - even though you repeat a small bit of trail.

When I went south, I got a ride from White River Junction from a kind soul on trail forums. When I went North I got a ride from an LT thru-hiker I'd run into on both trips who was kind enough to pick me up and take me to the Montpelier bus station. Montpelier by bus and St. Albans by train are probably the closest points public transportation will take you to.

I am teaching a course Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Fall semester, which starts much earlier than usual (August 25th) - so I could join your for just a few days, driving to the trail after class on a Thursday and heading back sometime Monday. I could probably help with resupply at either end.

I'd probably aim for the weekend after Labor Day, especially if you were going Northbound.

Hey c!b!

Let me know if you need help getting a ride. My mom lives 15 minutes from White River Jct and I have an aunt that is about 10 minutes from Burlington. My mom teaches so it would be harder for her on weekdays but my aunt is retired.

Also - in the Waitsfield area there is guy names Mike who owns Mad Cab (802-793-2320). He shuttles to Burlington for very reasonable rates.

I don't think so.

But 5 Olde Nugget Alley (in Hanover, NH) opened a sister place in SoRo called "5 Olde Tavern & Grille". Yummy food!
