Well, I just got home from hiking the Old Loggers Path, Sullivan Mountain/Rock Run side and boy are my arms are tired. Had Chicken and Biscuts and Yuengling Lagers at the Forksville Inn. It was a snowwy winterland in upstate PA..

I'll try and get a TR and pics up here momentarily.

I love Yuengling. Why oh why won't they sell it in Colorado?

My friend Heath from work wanted to head out into the woods and I suggested the Old Loggers Path. I had been to Masten a few week earlier with the Bonehead clan and a taste for the OLP.

The Old Loggers Path or OLP is a 27+ circut loop in Loyalsock State Forest in Lycoming County, PA. The main trailhead is in Masten, PA, a former and abandoned lumber town from the early 20th century.

We decided to to the 17 mile Sullivan Mountain/Rock Run side and make it a 20 mile loop by using the old 3.5 mile abandoned Susquehanna Railroad grade.

We parked in Masten and hiked up to the old railroad grade on the opposite side of Pleasant Stream.

There was a light dusting of snow on the trees and ground, but the temperature was rising and with every step the snow was quickly melting.

About 2.5 miles in, the trail took a hard left and went up a hill and I was confused, so I suggested we continue along the old grade. A few tenths of a mile later, we came to a dead end where a bridge crossed the Pleasant Stream and we had to climb down off the grade and walk along the stream, navigate around and traverse a mudslide area, with out sliding into the stream.

This, however worked to our advantage, because we found an excellent place to cross Pleasant Stream, which most of the time, makes for a chilly creek ford and the stream was up fromn the recent rains and snow.

So, we got across without incident and walked up to Pleasant stream Rd and after a mile roadwalk, found our way to the Old Loggers Path.

There we hiked along Trout Run? and then climbed Sullivan Mountains and had lunch on the first vista that overlooks Pleasant Stream.

By then the snow had pretty much melted. We saw some other backpackers at the next couple vistas. Our goal was to make to Rock Run, but we stopped at Doe Run after 10 miles. We had a very nice campsite.

It was about 4pm when we arrived in camp. We got a fire going, set up camp, had dinner, some irish whiskey and hung out by the fire until about 7 and then went to bed. exciting. It was getting increasingly cold and snowing harder and harder.

When I woke the following morning, there were atleast 2 inches on the ground and the snow was still coming down. My Henry Shire was sagging alot from the weight of the wet snow.

The snow continued all morning as we packed up and hit the trail, with 10 miles to go 'til Masten.

Rock Run vista gave us a beautiful snowwy view into the gorge and the Rock Run and Yellow Dog Run put on their usual awesome show.

The last few miles were snowwy and uneventful.

We were done hiking before 2 and hit the road to Forksville Inn for some Lagers and Chicken and Biscuts, followed by the drive how. The upstate PA was a snowwy mess, but by the time we were downstate, the snow changed to rain and it was 40 degrees.

Did that reddish leaved bush have wings on the limbs? What did the bark look like?

It looks like burning bush to me but I would have to look at the branches to tell for sure.

I don't think it was a burning bush. It had berries and smooth redish brown bark, round branches. I don't think burning bushes have yellow in the leaves ever either. But, I could be wrong.

Nice pictures and report. Sounds like a great overnight loop!

thanks everyone. I had an OLP itch since the Masten trip. The cross connector trail makes it a nice weekend/overnighter loop.

The campsite at Doe Run made for great digs Saturday night. It was wild waking up to 3 inches of snow. We weren't expecting that.

Randall, alas, the veritable tropical paradice that is PA has been replaced by a veritable middle pole and frozen tundra.

March is going to be a tricky month for me. It might be hard to get out. I will have a newborn baby in March :)

That's the coolest surprise!

I had a doctor named Esmerelda for a while.
When she gave me a physical about seven years ago it involved checking the prostate..............first time for me.

Sez she:
"It feels OK to me."
(with a real deadpan professional attitude)

Sez me:
"I don't know doctor, it felt kinda funny to me!"

I got a pretty good chuckle out of this very straight-laced lady.
I mean, she practically had the demeanor of a nun.
Only a nun is duh meaner of duh two.

I still think it's a hoax. That sure looked like a pillow stuffed under Lyra's shirt at Masten.

But just in case:

Cletus = boy
Bubbette = girl

btw - nice report and pics, ENS. Gotta love the OLP.
