Nuclear Weapons

“I must be getting conservative in my old age. I saw an article in yesterdays paper that said a majority of Americans think we don't need nuclear weapons.

People know I'm no fan of many of many of our government's foreign policy adventures, but with all the countries that have nuclear weapons - I think we'd be in tough shape if we didn't have any.

China, possibly Russia, - their nukes would toast us before we could finish the job. Furthermore, China is getting stronger all the time and thirstier for oil and other raw materials.

However, even if it took just a week to lay waste to a nation that had a lot of nukes, they could get a lot done with nukes in the first couple days.

Think of this scenario: China wants to take Taiwan. They might go ahead and try one day. If the US had no nukes, they would probably decide sooner or later to take it figuring that if the US tries to stop it, they can pretty much cook us before we can do much about it. It wouldn't be too hard to imagine them figuring we'd back off when push came to shove. Either they would be right and one large thriving democracy is gone and the balance of power in Asia is upset with little cost to the China or we've got one heck of a hot war on out hands.
