“i agree with what you said gojo, but the only thing i would say is that when it comes to the following scenario, i'm not sure if a less expensive headlamp would hold up,

say, you drop it out of your bag onto a rock and then lands in a puddle, you're really going to need that for the rest of a trip, you wouldn't want it breaking... i'm sure the energizer is fine, but i'm just not sure on how durable it is...”

It is great for around camp and in the tent.
It has limited usefulness if you have to hike at night.

My last trip we did some backpacking well past dusk on a trail we knew to a familiar camp. The Energizer just didn't light up enough of the trail for me. I would like something a little more powerful, esp. if I was on an unfamiliar trail.”

“Got my headlamp at Aldi's for 8 bucks. Runs on 3 AAA's. It has "set the world on fire", "read in the tent", and "super covert red" settings. I don't think it even has a brand but it's been freakin great, and has taken a few hard knocks, and numerous trips in the rain.”

“My original Petzl Tikka was the dimmest light and least durable, but I loved it enough to buy 3. The energizer I replaced it with was much brighter and sturdier.

My local wally world has 2 energizers - one is a monster you'd never want to take backpacking and the other is smaller, cheaper and more reasonable. My energizer is very durable. My only complaint is the switch sometimes gets turned on in my pack, so I keep a piece of duct tape over it.

But the Tikka XP is really bright, has a spot and a flood and a low battery indicator. It's the bomb.”
