Giuliani's Dirty Laundry Gets a Nationwide Airing
By Craig Crawford | November 30, 2007 6:00 AM

Rudy Giuliani offers a good enough excuse for the weird accounting practices for his security detail’s travel with him while he was New York mayor. He says the police department was so slow in paying its expenses that City Hall picked up the tab and was reimbursed later.

But the excuse is not good enough to repair the potential damage to his bid for the Republican presidential nomination. That’s because what Giuliani isn’t denying is that these expenses involved personal trips with his then-mistress, Judith Nathan (who is now his wife). The trouble is that he was married to someone else at the time. This means that the flurry of news reports about these matters are highlighting the period in his life when he was conducting an adulterous affair. And the strange expensing of those trips gives the impression that the mayor’s office was trying to keep them out of public view.

There are still plenty of GOP voters outside New York who have not heard the sordid details about Giuliani’s personal life in those days (which, by the way, is the reason that his children barely speak to him). And stories like this, even if you accept his explanations for how the expenses were handled, only serve to introduce the dirty details to voters around the country.

the only ammunition the dems seem to have is.. "look how bad bush was"...its getting old.. yes we all know he sucked as president but that shouldnt affect your opinion on republicans in general. Im not gunna sit here and rant and rave about how bad clinton was becuase weve all heard it a thousand times.. singular people shouldn't effect entire parties as much as they do. its the uneducated who make these comparisons and unfortunatly much of the united states IS uneducated.

Dude!   How many hours per day do you watch C-SPAN?    LMAO

You ought to check it out.   Authors' readings from various DC-area bookstores and symposia at various public policy think tanks (AEI, Brookings, Heritage, Cato, Progressive Policy Institute, Hoover, .... you-name-it) are much more educational than the hot air that blows when Congress is in session.  They should take longer vacations!

Washington Journal is a great morning show, comparing headlines in various papers.... but so many of the callers (and guests) simply regurgitate talking points.  Watch for Charlie Cook's people.   They do good work and are straight-shooters.

Then there's BookTV on C-SPAN2 on the weekends (more public policy, more history).... Panels of non-fiction authors at various book fairs around the country.... and on Sundays you have Q & A.... In Depth   [3 whole hours with Newt (live) this Sunday starting at noon, EST... you should email a question or call in).... After Words .... (Booknotes, RIP).

Congressional Quarterly and The Hill both have free email updates daily (plus breaking news).

The Republican base should toss Rudy long before the General..... unless they haven't wised up any since the last time.  Evangelicals are nearly in open revolt, talking about recruiting an independent.  Huckabee has the momentum at the moment ---- but we'll see what happens when Romney's attack ads really get going, esp. in Iowa.

Did you happen to catch what Hagel said at the CFR on Wednesday?

        -- Wow --

There are many news reports bouncing around, but here's a transcript.

Go to the primary source, I always say.

OKATIE, SC -- Giuliani refused to take questions here today about allegations that travel expenses were picked up by obscure city offices when he was mayor of New York City.

“We’ve already explained it,” he said, walking past reporters after a town hall meeting.

Giuliani, who is normally friendly to reporters, bristled past them, and campaign staffers were unusually physical in keeping the press away. Several campaign aides told campaign reporters to return to the press area, and some of his security detail manhandled reporters. On other occasions, reporters have been free to video Giuliani as he is shaking hands and signing autographs after events, and he often informally takes questions from reporters.

In all seriousness, if I were a Republican, I'd be praying Rudi doesn't get the nomination.

I just get the feeling there's so much more crap to come out about him, and it will if he takes the full Presidential run spotlight.

I'm wondering if those comments by Hagel deserve their own thread.  He didn't pull any punches that time!    (links to stories and transcript above)

Then he met with Bloomberg.....  That got some tongues wagging.  Imagine an independent ticket with Hagel's gravitas and Bloomberg's cash-on-hand.  Bloomberg also met with Obama, but that came off as more of a photo op.

Or how's about a Hagel/Paul ticket... or Paul/Hagel?   Wouldn't that be a kick in the pants?  What would the resulting internet fundraising surge look like for that combination?

Which hypocrisy would it be, the one where you call cowards of those who did serve but are against the war, while you are for the war but didn't serve? Would it be that hypocrisy? Straighten me out on this, I think I need a link or a blog...someone else's truth, or something.
