I remember him well, even his interviews by Howard Cossell.

Christ, he wasn't that much older than me.

My road-trippin' buddies and I were in Butte, Montana in August 1974 and waited for Evel Knievel to show up for rumored a pre-jump party.

Butte was loaded with motorcycle and other travelers who had heard of Knievel's boast to "drink the town dry" starting at the Freeway Tavern(I think that was the name).

He finally showed up with Bobby Riggs and the free beer commenced to flow.
Until then people were pretty stingy and nursed their beers..........."where is that S.O.B.?"

Within minutes the floor was wet with beer.
I have a 6' 8" wingspan and offered my services to pass the six packs from the bar on out to the eager party-goers and help get this thing going.
At first the bartender looked skeptical but quickly realized that I was doing a public service.
"Hey man, Evel is payin'!!"

My buddies and I shook hands with Evel and Bobby and swilled some beers. We then filled our army jacket pockets with as much beer as we could carry and saddled up the sickles and headed east to a place where we had been camping for a few nights.

We didn't stick around for the stupid canyon jump, just the party and then hit the road.

Evel was wearing something that looked like Elvis Light and carrying a cane with a glass door knob on top.

It couldn't have been a diamond...............nah.

Yes MarkO, it was a diamond studded walking stick with bourbon in it. (I believe he made that claim himself.)

When I was a kid we used to copy Evil all the time, including many of the injuries, lol.

When I was in 5th grade and my younger sister was in third, she had a handicapped friend who used to ask me questions constantly whenever I would see the two of them together. I always answered his questions with outrageous fabrications beginning with my name: Evil Knievil. For the next two years whenever he saw me at school he would politely say, "Hi Evil!"
