“Turner owns a lot of property adjacent to the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. When we were out there for a 12 day backpacking trek, the boys took special pride in making sure they took a crap on Turner's property. Then again, they also took pride in not bathing for 12 days!

HyWay is right about this being a legitimate way to preserve land and it's certainly not the only way.
Government acquisition has it's place as well for rights of way and also conservation of resources like timber.
