Letter from MT. ROGERS Recreation Area

“I recieved a letter today requesting my comments on the Forest Service's proposal to use mating disruption pheromone flakes on 105,054 acres to slow the spread of gypsy moth population. What in the sam heck is this? Does this get into the water supply? what does it do to when you breath it?

Many of you Backpack here and I thought you should know this. What comments do I send them?”

“sounds like a waste of money to me but it may help keep down the number of blowdown oaks ten years from now - gypsy moths defoliate trees such as oak in the spring - generally one spring the tree can recover however the gypsy moths will hit again the two next years which will often kill the tree - generally after three years the diseases of the gypsy moth catch up to them and they won't have the massive populations in that area again

these pheromone flakes may reduce the height of the spike in population which may help save some trees assuming that it does not also slow down the spread of the gypsy moth diseases”

The gov't wants to do something to keep the bugs from tearing up the forest and your concerned that it might inadvertantly harm you in some presently unknown way?

“I say we need to fight the gypsy moth the same way it got introduced. Let's bring in another non-native species to do something it doesn't do very well and then let it loose. Pretty the gypsy moths will get tired of competing for food and go somewhere else. Or not. Depending on the non-native we introduce.”

“BTW, last time I was there, (Mem. Day weekend) there was a petition to get a cell tower near but not on Mt. Rogers. The park, forest service and others were actually for this idea. Mainly because it would not be that obtrusive to the views where it was planned. It would also cut down on false calls for rescues on Mt. Rogers and surrounding area. I don't want to start an argument about cell phones, I usually don't carry mine, but leave it in the car. It would have been handy to call our friends from there on one trip that went bad tho.”

they told us they will look like a Natural object... duhuu like a Pine Tree.. and when I see a pic of one... I almost freaked in my pants... no way it looked like a Tree.
Very soon...... we all will be having real Sat Phones without Cell Towers....
Cell towers are generating Lots of Money for those BIG CORPS who have ingested there savings in Towers..... Look at SPRINT.... they bought out Nextel.... and there are more... It is a survival mode for big Corp. too do this.......
Sat phones will eliminate all most all towers.

We don't need towers in the Mountains where we can pee on them... I would rather pee on a tree............

We don't need to see Towers in the Backpacking area of Mt Rogers period........
when I travel to these trips I see so many Towers because i do not have them all around My life here at mt Rogers.... If you need a cell tower then don't come here.

“I live here and have no problem not having a cell tower near by... Yes i do not have cell service at my Home .

Everyone I have backpacked with here at MT. Rogers have all said how georgeous it is here like so many other places throughout the East along the AT. They said that with NO CELL TOWERS AROUND.
When I set up my camp along Wilburn Ridge area or, along the At near Rodo gap and Thomas Knob and look out at the VISTA and see no BLINKING LIGHT AT A DISTANCE... .............YES.................this is why I like backpacking here to see this and experience the all Natural View.

Keep your cell Towers out of Mt Rogers area and beyond.
You know your limits when it comes to backapcking Karo and if you use the excuse of IF WE HAD A CELL PHONE THAT WENT BAD THO.... bull trash xxxxxxx.... Stay Home .
I hate Cell Towers and I don't give a big flip on who Promotes them.....”

I am also going to look deeper at all the private land owners in the area that have potential areas where cell towers can be utilized . That's who sells them the spot to build these junky klunks of XXXX.”

However, I am very curious to know what the regional entomologist predicts as far as outcome. Seems like a lesson in futility to me.”

“I'm not advocating for cell towers in Mt Rogers area, but there is one of those tree looking towers on I-40 near RDU airport. The only way you can tell its a tower from I-40 is that it is taller than the trees around it. Of course at walking speed it probably doesn't look like a tree :)”

“Well from the ground, I am sure the massive amounts of wiring would be a little more noticable.”

“They could easily put one on top of the welcome center. Since it is on top of a ridge you would only need about a 5-10 ft one which means you don't need any lights. That would cover the majority of MT. rogers w/out anyone ever noticing it.”
