it has been over twenty years since I made a gingerbread house. A friend is coming to stay with us for a few days and she has an 8 year old. so I thought this would be fun to do for the entire family.

when was the last time you made one?

I've never made one. :-(

I did help my nephew build a gingerbread train a few years ago.

Hmmm, about 6 years ago. The fun part is buying as many kinds of cool-looking candy as you can find, for all the different parts of the house. Making stained glass windows for the house is fun too. It involves piping out the window form in dough and filling the panel areas with crushed life savers, then baking it.

Last year I did two. One with the kindergarten class and one in FL, after Christmas.

Treebait those stained glass windows sound cool!

I love the gingerbread house competitions on Food Network. Those people get nutsy and make stunning houses.

We have an annual competition at a relative's house. We spend a few hours on them and completely destroy the kitchen. Then, we typically bring in an outsider (a neighbor) to judge the houses. It is amazing how completely different the houses can be with everyone bringing their own candy, etc.

We've been doing them every year, except I guess we aren't this year... :(

My mom bakes the gingerbread parts and we glue it together with this hot sugar mixture that burns the hell out of you if you accidentally drip some on you...I think I have scars...

I don't have the attention span to make one. I am "domestically challenged" when it comes to these things. But I think gingerbread houses are very cool. Good luck Mapes.

mapleleaf just can not let it go. Talk about an obsession. Is there any doubt in anybody's mind that she's completely obsessed with me? Maybe because she knows she can't have me ...

I watched the Gingerbread house competition on the Food Channel and someone made windows that looked like stained glass from liquid sugar with food coloring in it poured into molds. It gave the house a nice touch.

It's time to begin planning for a Valentine's Day-themed house!

But I'm thinking instead of the standard candy hearts stuck on the outside.....

......

One could use these new ones from the folks at Despair, Inc!

Awww that's a cute idea, Maple!!

Ha, those "flavors" are hilarious. And so true! I can't believe people eat those hearts. And are those Necco wafers or however you spell them on your house, Maple? I can't even believe those exist, they're wretched.
