I hate the last hour before I hit the road for a hike. It crawls so slow, and I always think I'm forgeting something and I can't get any work done. AAARRRGH!

I just did 4 miles on our local bike trail. We had 12" of snow and Mugsy and I were the only tracks. OMG, do my lower calves hurt. I have never burned a muscle (both legs) so bad from walking/hiking/backpacking before. It's killing me just sitting here at the computer.

At what depth of snow do folks use snowshoes.?

I think there has to be a 4" base. at least thats what it is here at the snow shoe park down the road and at the dunes.

The meeting time was supposed to be 10:00 AM Local time this morning and as a general rule, that usually happens late by about a half hour or so. Check the trip page. I am not sure where they were supposed to meet though!
I know they were gonna be at the Blackwell horse camp Friday night. Did you go there?
Sometimes the first trip is like that. I have tried to call Golf on the cell and he does not answer. I will try gain and see what happens.
See ya later.

Hi all, I'm home. Mule, we were at Blackwell both Friday and Saturday night. It would have been hard to miss us, just follow the fire.
It was a good trip with many changes. I did end up pulling up camp on Saturday night because I couldn't sleep. Good to see everyone.

I came so close to turning into the Horse Camp on my way out. Should have. I didn't pick up on the change to Blackwell, but I had a nice night out there anyway. Later, Mule

Peepers?????
Peepers?, Peeper? A Campsite? I heard some of you talking about this on the thread. Could someone tell me what and where it is. A friend of mine heard of it too, but yall are the only ones I've heard of that knows what/where it is.

If you ever want to find some places pretty special in this forest I and some of my friends could lead you to some of our private places. I would help anyone who asked. Mule

Deam Wilderness Trip Report
It's the trip report! The trip report! First of all, this disclaimer. The trip leader bailed, so all semblance of leadership was lost. We broke ever single TT trip rule, and actually felt pretty good doing it. This report is about numbers. We thought we might have 20+ on this hike, we had 10 ( sort of). They predicted 14 inches of snow, some had that, some less, we has < 1 inch on the ground in the Deam ( which was a good thing). Low Temps on Friday were around 20, Sat. maybe 25. We burned up 2 truck loads of wood. Fenderbender drank about 6 Miller lites. On Friday we went to bed with 3 hikers, but woke up with 4. On Sat. we went to bed with 7 hikers, but woke up with 4. I'll explain later. I'd guess we actually hiked about 10+ miles on Sat., none on Friday or Sun. So, with that preview, here is how it all happened. On Friday afternoon Coyote arrived first at the Blackwell Horse Camp, and was busy building a fire when I ( GH) arrived. We did the fire, put up tents, and then along comes Windigirl. We all ate & enjoyed a fantastic fire ( great wood Coyote). Turned in around 10:45, as we waited for Meangrean as long as possible. He did drive in after midnight, slept in his new Car/tent, and we all had a nice breakfast in the AM. Boy what a breakfast. Turkey sausage & gravy on home made biscuits ( well it was white bread, but we pretended they were biscuits). What a way to prepare for a day of hiking. About that time, folks began arriving. Oldog, Fenderbender, Jerbear, Stokely, Leversofpower & Clint. That's 10![/u. Well about that time I was voted Trip Leader. First decision was to leave tents right where they were, and we all decided to go to Patten Cave on a day hike. btw, no hammer, no tent in the ground! So, off we go. Somewhere about 2 miles I lost control, ceased to be Trip Leader & just hiked along behind a fractured leadership of Meangrean & Oldog. They both went different directions, but somehow we all wound up at the Love Rock for lunch. Oh the memories! ( FYI, Randall, your fire is almost out). A few of us did go into the cave, some even to the far room. It was a beautiful day, cool, but never cold, sunny, not windy. We took the long route back to Blackwell, for about a [u]7 mile hike after lunch. At this point Leversofpower & Clint headed back on the short route to the base camp. Now we are 8. Back in camp, we collectively decided that it would be fun to have dinner in town, sooooo, off we went. The Cabin Restaurant ( think bag of water over the door), had not seen such a spike in business in forever. We had a great dinner & back to camp for a great campfire. About 9:30, Coyote decided to head home, so now we have 7.... Some turned into their tents, some their tarps, some their pickups & Meangrean in his new car/tent. There were periodic noises in the night, as those in cars would actually start them up, get some heat, shut it off & repeat this ever few hours. Anoying, but probably necessary to stay alive. Sooooo... it's time to wake up on Sun., and I climb out of my tent, and guess what, now there are 4 of us... It's not really clear what happened. Either Fenderbender, Oldog & Windigirl were abducted, or maybe they wanted to do a night hike, but they were gone! Hell, even I did not stay for breakfast. I broke camp, walked the 30 feet to my car, scraped the window & headed out. MG, Bear & Stokely then concluded the weekend hike ( if you can call it that) As an aside, we all agreed that there were no Elk, panthers, hoot owls, or wild turkeys. Heck, we stayed two days in a horse corral & never even saw a horse. Very poor wildlife report. Okay, my philosophy is that ever hike& ever outing is fun. You just have to find it. I believe we all had a good time, just a little unusual....
