“Does a 5 year old whose been on several bp-ing trips count? That's our daughter. She has a fit if she can't get out daily, and always wants to go to the mountains, even if for a very brief visit.

Dayhiker has 2 little un's who go backpacking too.

I think they all qualify as "under 23."”

“To be honest, I wouldn't want my kids visiting Trail Talk. If they want to post on a backpacking forum I would send them to Backpacker. My kids are to mature for this board.”

“It is kinda sad that it seems this generation is less into the outdoors than previous generations.

I'm currently a Scoutmaster and for a lot of my boys, its like pulling teeth to get them to go camping and like pulling toenails to get them to go hiking/backpacking. I've seriously had one boy tell me, I can't go camping this weekend because I have to play my Wii!!

We brought up the idea of putting in for a Philmont trek and they all seemed very excited to go. We put in, got a trek, and now only have 2 boys who want to go. We had to take a few boys from another troop just to get enough youth to be able to go.”

“Damn, that is sad, Dave. Well, I can only surmise that a lot of the lethargy has to do with their upbringing, parenting, etc. You seem to be doing your part to try and keep them engaged.

I can tell you for certain: no video game consoles for my kids.”

That's effing insane. It is next to impossible to get a troop slot at Philmont. I know, I tried to get one for 6 years and never could.

I didn't have a problem getting scouts to go camping or backpacking. However, we made it known that if you didn't want to hike or camp then you didn't want to be in our troop.

“That's very sad. I pretty much grew up outside. Then again my family never had a lot of money growing up, so things like video games rarely got bought. Going and playing in the woods behind the trailer was about the only entertainment we had and I wouldn't change that for the world.”

“We were very lucky to get a slot at Philmont. In fact, we pretty much put in thinking there would be no way that we would get a slot anyway.

I grew up outdoors as well, although not as much as I would have liked. We didn't have video games or computers or whatever. However, unless it was a Scout outing, we really didn't do a whole lot more than just playing in the neighborhood. I think that goes a long way and I try to encourage my girls to play outside as much as possible.

I think that is the key. Kids have got to play outside more often. Problem is, its much easier to keep track of your kids when they are inside watching TV or playing than when they are out in the hood. Just yesterday, a young boy and girl were at the park with their aunt and some random guy tried to rape the little girl.”
