who has a trail dog? and what breed do U recommendView Messages“A twelve pack aday donkey, thanks.” 11:39:26 AM 12/17/07 “Now yer talkin'” 11:40:49 AM 12/17/07 “If you are not willing to train your dog, control it at all times, and bring gear for it, don't take it. Its pretty irritating to have someone's dog with wet muddy feet crawl on my sleeping bag because the dog doesn't have a place to sit off the snow, or hanging around as I eat because the dog is hungry. That being said, I have a great trail dog now, obtained at the pound. She is small enough to not be a lummix around a smallish house, big enough to carry her own food. She is mix of border collie and either a terrier or a whippet. She is definitely built for running, but is ALWAYS on duty, doing her job. We don't know what her job is, but it seems to involve standing next to and leaning against people, either guarding us or herding us. She comes instantly when I call, and she generally hikes in a heeling position, or right behind me. If I tell her to "go" she'll take off 20 yards down the trail, then wait for me, and fall back into a heeling position. One time we were descending a hillside full of brush, and she had gone a little ahead of us. I looked on a hill to one side, and I saw about 40 deer being herded by one little black dog. No barking, just trotting side to side. I called to her, and she headed straight for me like a shot. She is an exceptional dog that I would clone if I could. ”1:23:18 PM 12/17/07 “I used to work for Inyo National Forrest for 7 years seasonal work I was a ranger for Mount Whitney in 96 and 94,95,97,98,2000,2001 worked on heavy construction Trail crews I have a Germen Shepard/Akita/eastern red wolf mix dog she was and still is at 11 one the best trail dogs I have ever had. If could figure out how to paste a jpg I would show a picture of her. On a general stand point of opinion I would say a Lab,Golden Retriever, or German Shepard are top notch trail dogs sweet as pie but aggressive enough to chase away bears is an absolute must in a trail dog.” 6:06:59 PM 12/17/07 “Don't get a Cocker Spaniel they run around for a few hours at 75mph before they get tired, howl whenever they hear cop sirens, and try to act all big and bad when they really aren't. The cuteness is a trick whatever you do don't look directly into his eyes even though it is just a picture.” 7:16:48 PM 12/17/07 “get a dog that you can easily dispatch in case of an emergency Sorry. This made me laugh. The image I had was "What's that Lassie? Jimmy san fell in a well?"” ASUDave you misunderstand me. i meant "dispatch" as in to harvest for food.” 7:21:03 PM 12/17/07
