I'm not so happy with my choices of hats when the mercury starts sliding, as it is now.
What do you use and how do you rate your experience with said headgear?

I use a polyester/spandex skull cap you get from UnderArmour with my regular beanie works for me.

i like fleece because it doesn't itch. i do have a "Turtle Fur" non fleece beanie that does not itch though, a first. i hate when beanie hats are too tight and make your ears hurt after a while.

campmor.com and rei.com have the largest selections i've seen so far.

I have a patagonia hat that I wear. Don't use it so much while hiking but I do wear it in camp and while sleeping

It was like 12 degrees and snowing hard with a hellish wind pushing the chill below 0 when I was walking the hounds this morning. 'I could do with a new hat'..... I thought as my ears threatened to fall off the side of my head.

For some ungodly reason I just shaved what little remains of my hair this past week. I can no longer go outside the house without a hat and, in fact, often wear it within. I can't describe it except to say that it has two rabbit fur lined ear flaps that fasten under my chin and snap together on top of my head when not in use. The "dome" is insulated and is snugly warm. It's highly functional regarding its intended purpose, looking pretty dorky which may say less about that hat and more about me:).

I use a Golite winter cap. I don't know the actual name of it, but it is light-weight, compacts very small and is very warm. It covers my ears and velcros under my chin. With a scarf and goggles I look like the Red Barron.

After the turn of the century
In the clear blue skies over Germany
Came a roar and a thunder men had never heard
Like the scream and the sound of a big war bird

Up in the sky, a man in a plane
Baron von Richthofen was his name
Eighty men tried, and eighty men died
Now they're buried together on the countryside

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score
Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree
of the Bloody Red Baron of Germany

In the nick of time, a hero arose
A funny-looking dog with a big black nose
He flew into the sky to seek revenge
But the Baron shot him down - "Curses, foiled again!"

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score
Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree
of the Bloody Red Baron of Germany

Now, Snoopy had sworn that he'd get that man
So he asked the Great Pumpkin for a new battle plan
He challenged the German to a real dogfight
While the Baron was laughing, he got him in his sight

That Bloody Red Baron was in a fix
He'd tried everything, but he'd run out of tricks
Snoopy fired once, and he fired twice
And that Bloody Red Baron went spinning out of sight

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score
Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree
of the Bloody Red Baron of Germany

Ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or more
The Bloody Red Baron was rollin' up the score
Eighty men died tryin' to end that spree

Can't believe nobody has mentioned the Mountain Hardwear Dome Perignon.

Fleece hat with ear flaps and windstopper lining.

smart wool cuffed beanie when it is on the warmer side. Very nice simple hat. Great stretch, soft, breathes nice. Good for aerobic stuff or under bike helmet too.

windproof fleece Outdoor Research hat when colder. Love it too. Kind of like this one, but larger ear flaps and a string with a cinch.

and one of these for subzero XC skiing or biking. Windstopper fleece.

holy cat crap... y2 asked for a hat not a darth vader mask!

best three i have found.

1. turtle fur. warmest damn hat i ever had. really soft. i mainly used this for sleeping on really cold nights.

2. possom down. i have NEVER seen a hat that had a better loft to weight ratio period. look on backpackinglight.com for this. it's a great item.

3. wigwam hat...dunno which one, just a pull-over knit cap. really simple. they make good stuff. i use this hat every day when i go running in the winter. it is warm, fits well, wicks moisture away, and dries very fast. it's heavier than the other two options but a good hat.

Y2, I bought it yrs ago. It was called the Dome hat. I looked at Patagonia's site and they don't have anything like it now. The closest thing to it is this Synchilla Duckbill Hat. The material is the same but mine doesn't have the bill

as with other winter gear I layer my hats - first layer is a thin polypro hat liner, next layer often is a hand made beanie, then sometimes a army surplus polypro balaclava, then often a stretch knit hat (acrylic I think) and lastly for really cold times a down balaclava.

Ha! I have a similar hat, WK, only without the satanic symbol on it.

For winter hiking I have been wearing a fleece cap, but I found that the wicking properties, though very nice, tend to allow frost to build up on the outside of the hat.

I was in Russia in 89 as the Soviet union was falling apart. The soldiers guarding the tourists sites would offer to sell you their hats, and even their rifles.

a HOOD is best, with a fleece or Poly cap on the noggin....

The hood offers neck and ear protection no simple cap can offer.

I have wore this on many cold weather hikes. The best was probably when my cousin and I joined a trip down at Savage Gulf with 25 or so peeps in attendance.

Anyone tried one of these? Admittedly not the coolest item ever - but I do like the option of ear cover / no ear cover + the concept of being able to keep snow and rain off my face.

Yeah, I forgot about those.   I had one some years ago and it kept my ears pretty warm even without the fold-down cover.   It was marvelous for keeping rain from running down my neck, too!
