Do they call people who hang out in the Hamptons "Hampsters"?   I truly think that they should.

I don't own a hamster, but they are really cool pets. Here are some interesting facts about hamsters that I found on the internet.

Hamsters belong to the rodent family. They have a range of Europe and Asia. The name “hamster” is derived from the German word “hamstern” which means “to hoard”. They got this name because of the way they store food in their cheek pouches. They can store and carry up to half their body weight in their pouches. In times of danger they will carry their young in the cheek pouches.

Wild hamsters live in hot areas of Central Asia. To avoid the heat of the day hamsters live in burrows and are nocturnal. In the cool of the evening and during the night hamsters will search for food and can travel up to 8 miles in one night. They collect food in their cheek pouches and return to their burrows and empty the cheek pouches into their food store. A hamster burrow can be as deep as 5 feet.

Hamsters generally live 2 to 4 years. If well cared for in captivity they can live longer, up to 20 years. That's the longest living hamster on record.

There are 4 basic types of hamsters: Syrian, Russian dwarf, Chinese and Roborovski.

The gestation period of a Syrian hamster is 16 days.

Syrian hamsters are solitary animals and will not live peacefully with other hamsters past 8-10 weeks.

Domestication of hamsters began in 1930, when a zoologist found one mother and twelve young hamsters in the Syrian desert.

Hamsters have 2-12 young at a time.

During hibernation a Golden hamsters pulse rate can go from 400 beats per minute to 4 beats per minute.

Hamsters are omnivorous; they mainly eat grains, fruit and leaves, but will also eat insects.

Hamsters have scent glands, but the location differs depending on the type of hamster.

The largest hamsters can be 13 inches long and 32 ounces. The smallest 2 inches long and 3.5 ounces.

not true about the one we have now Rich. she is very picky about her cage and has a separate corner for each function. one for sleeping, one for eating and one for pooping.

the guinea pig we had before was messy, but we think it's because she was traumatized and didn't know how to be clean. her former owner, a young boy of 12, didn't want to clean her cage anymore, so he brought her across to our apartments and turned her loose. when we found her she had been living wild in the yard for at least a month according to a neighbor. it was two years later when we met the boy and got the story. i'd like to wring his little neck. i'm still shocked that she wasn't taken by the various hawks or owls that frequent our neighborhood.

btw, our hamsters were all dirty little cage piggies, pooping everywhere!!!

Pamela, sounds like you have a nice pet. That's terrible about that boy abandoning the guinea pig. The only small pet I've ever owned was a parakeet, but that was decades ago.
