Friday Night Camping on The Adena Trace
Hey All!!
I will be arriving on Friday, (1/04/2008) early afternoon and will be camping a couple of miles off of the trailhead on the east side of the lake. I have posted a very rough map of the approximate location in the trip album. If anyone is interested get back with me.
See ya later.

I'm thinking that this will work for me. Daylight will be short: 7:50am to 5:30pm

I'm considering starting at Bonwell and getting to Garr by 10am (I'd have 2 hours). I gotta see how long that took me last time (subtract the time the "fickle finger of fate took.....). If I did that I would just hike the extra mile to my car on Sunday unless we will be going out to eat. Then I would get a shuttle so I wouldn't be late.

I liked Adena Trace the last time. It will be even better to be able to use my hiking poles for their PRIMARY purpose.....

Hey guys! Thanks for the invite Randall. I'd love to camp with you guys. I just can't get the Saturday off. Here's what I might do.

I'm thinking about dayhiking this whole thing. What can I say... g-force has inspired me. LOL! Well anywho, I may come out on Saturday night and either sleep in the car and hit the trail at dawn or just before or something like that. Randall let me know how far south of the causeway you plan on camping and I may try to night hike in that far and camp with you guys. We'll see what the weather looks like, and how ballsy I feel when next weekend gets here. LOL!

Dayhike the WHOLE THING in 9 hours? Not a chance. Bring a couple headlamps.

you can come with me if you like Chin. I never said I would do it in daylight, just with out making camp. Come along. It'll be fun.

Hey anyone else interested in doing this is welcome to come too. Attila, g-force, who ever. Anyone besides Chin got some advice, or feed back about this?

MG - Try to do the west end in daylight. There are multiple points on the west that the trail is hard to follow. The east side is pretty easy.
ChinMusic

That was the general plan. I figured I'd start on the west side of the causeway and head south before sun up.

Crossing the causeway that night on the return will be an experience though. cars + night + high speeds + me walking = splat LOL!
meangreen

That causeway is the most dangerous part of the whole thing. It takes a lot longer to cross it than you think it would too....deceptive.
ChinMusic
11:36:07 AM
12/27/07

I know. I may park on the east side of it and cross it in the morning just so it is done and out of the way.
It's so narrow it can get pretty scarry in there when a truck goes by.

I sent alot of invites!!
Hey Guys!!
I sent out alot of invites and I guess well see how big this gets!!
MG
I am not sure where we will be camping but it will be on the trail and on the west side!
Chin do you have the GPS location of the place we camped at last march??? That is about 9 to 10 miles from Garr hill and about 8 from the damm!
Maybe even a better spot would be right on Wolf Creek!!
See ya later.

Randall - Yes, I have the coordinates to where we camped in March. I'm pretty sure I can post it once I get home which might be as late as tomorrow.

That WAS a nice site with good water.

Speaking of water. I suppose it won't be an issue in January. Here in Cent Illinois our creeks are not frozen and we've had plenty of rain/snow. Will we have to cache anywhere?
ChinMusic

I would seriously doubt it Chin.
A) big ass lake just to your left all day (JK)
B) most of the smaller creeks etc around me are still up and running good. (I'm in west central IN)

Chin!!
Hey Chin!!
Water will not be a problem!!!
That is assuming the temps don’t totally freak out and go super sub zero for a long period of time. The lake is at draw down which means they have lowered it to make room for the spring rains. This really just means that there is more beach around the lake. (or mud flats in the bays)
See ya later.

LOL! Ya, so that means you will have to slog out in mud past your knees to get to water that you can pump out of the lake. LOL! JK not really. I'm sure there are places where there is sand or rocks or corpses that you can walk on to get to some water.

figures. Oh well it was kinda half baked any how. I'm not tryin that shlt in the rain. Especially not a 40deg. rain. That just screams SAR for a hypothermic meanie.

If you received an e-mail from me regarding day hiking this trail on Sunday... forget it.

See if that waypoint is in a format (WGS 84) that works for you. I did not mark the campsite but that is the waypoint for my last entry on Saturday and that is the same waypoint from which I started on Sunday. That has to be it.

Plenty o firewood though so we can have big fires both nights!! I am gonna call Attila and Golfhiker today and see if they are going.
Chin
Thankx for the GPS data, I will plug it in today and then we will see if they match Attila's, that way we will know fer sure!!
There are several other really great spots on the west side if that one turns out to be to windy, cold, wet, etc...

Spiders
Spiders! We will ever forget that hike? You've got "Snakes On A Plane" & "Spiders on a Trail". But honestly it's Jan., so I'm not expecting too much spider action.

Since your not expecting too much Spider action sounds like your gonna go!!!
Coyote.
Wolf creek is a good option and would make the fisrt days mileage close to 11 or so!!
I guess we will just have to see what the group decides!!

I'm considering starting at Bonwell. Bonwell to Garr would add about 6.5 miles.

Randall is exactly correct (did I just type that?), Garr to Camp Randall is almost 9 miles on the nose. Garr to the Wolf Creek crossing is 11. I do not have any campsites marked near the Wolf crossing but Randall knows this area better.

I don't know if I would want to tackle 17.5 miles on day 1 (I'm not MG....heheh), so I might just start with ya'll at Garr....undecided.

Wolf crossing to the dam is 7.5 miles. That leaves 1 more mile back to Bonwell for 26 miles for the total loop.

So is the O-fficial loop 26 miles?

Randall, don't feel bad the distance just felt much longer to them because they weren't tough enough to take what the trail had to dish out. ;-)

Salem!!
Good to hear from ya!! You otta talk ole Upluver (he can bring his Bourbon!!) in ta commin down as well!!

Yes, the Friday night campsite is right on the trail, about a mile from the trailhead.
Use New Fairfield, In. and Yahoo Maps will get you within 1 1/2 miles of the above-mentioned trailhead!! The trailhead parking lot is just west from New Fairfield, In. on the east side of the causeway. The trailhead is just across the road from there. Hit the trail and head south (You can only go South) and you will find us at the top of the first hill past the POWER LINE CUT. I will post some more info and maybe GPS data later on as the date gets closer.
See ya later.

Shuttles
Hey all!!
Looks like we might have a least 5 for the trip and I will be needing some help with the shuttle. It would great to get it set up Friday evening. I will probably have my van, which will seat 6 plus gear. If we have any more than that we will need to leave two vehicles at the dam. If you are planning on coming down early Friday gimme a shout.
See ya later.
