Just saw an update on CNN. Sad to say nothing new.

They get rid of the excess volunteers when the volunteers have a good chance of getting hurt of lost themselves, then they would have to searched for. That could be that the volunteers are not equipped or experienced for even being in the woods, or they are getting into terrain that exceeds their level of safety.

Hey dayhiker
About 3 to 4 years ago my daughter and I were hiking north of Blood Mountain and we encountered two seemingly "shady" men with knee length sheath knives who repeatedly questioned our plans... and then a small group of hikers (who we refer to as "The Calvary") convinced us to keep hiking and camp with them at Muskrat Creek Shelther. I wonder if we are the women that you speak of! If so, Thanks again, we slept better.

cnn update
They located the "man in question" at a gas station (I think north of Altanta) and they are going to question him regarding Meredith.
They also found the dog 50 miles from the trail - he wandered into a store.
Meredith and her family are in my thoughts.

fifty miles from the trail is where the dog showed up? eeech.... that does not sound good. I knew they had found the dog but I have no knowledge of the geography involved.

I agree the fifty mile distance seems strange. I got this info from cnn.com

50 miles as in maybe she took a ride with someone and he killed her and let the dog go?

I think a dog could go 50 in 2 days easy trying to get home.

dogs have been known to travel long distances.. is this any where in the direction from the trail to their home?

Ever since the couple went missing in Pisgah Forest (and the wife was found dead) the spouse has been freaking about me going out alone.

Ladies, do you feel there is a greater danger out there than before? Are you continuing to solo? Just curious to what the census is.

I was going to do some solo hiking this year, but this event makes me think twice. I've hiked alone a lot...I prefer hiking with someone, but I don't always have someone to go with!

Watch the news video. It appears the person of interest was cleaning out his van.

Rev, someone over at WB said that the dog was located in a area that is somewhat on his way home from Blood Moutain. But WB hikers familiar with the area, terrain, highways and development doubt that the dog could get to that point under his own power - not because of the distance, but because of the obstacles. Plus, the police have removed items that may belong to Meredith from the dumpster accross the street from where her dog was found. Pure speculation, but the dog probably was dropped off in the area.

Hi Nightlight...

The trip Dayhiker is referring to was back in March of 2002. I was there along with dayhiker, Smoke, Ductape, GWSherpa, Prowler, and CocoaWilliams.

Gee whiz, I take good notes.

http://www.wsbtv.com/news/14983460/detail.html

"Police found items belonging to missing hiker Meredith Emerson in a dumpster Saturday in Cumming, outside a store where surveillance cameras captured the man investigators are calling a "person of interest" in the case.

The discovery triggered a new search for Emerson, 24, as police fanned out into a wooded area near the store searching for any clues.

The Kroger store is the same location where Emerson's dog was found Friday night."

Lokks very bad for the young woman and appears that the person with the van may end up being more than a person of interest.

I remember one time my wife turned her ankle in S. Ohio and I left her behind to go get the truck since we were near the road. This thread is ensuring that I will never do that again. What a sad world we live in that we have to pack heat on the trails.

They are talking to investigators about the NC murders. Seems the person using the couples ATM card was wearing a yellow coat and he was wearing a yellow coat.

The ATM guy was reported to be between 5'8" and 5'11". The POI in this case is 5'10". Interesting. But I find it hard to believe that one person is responsible for the NC hiker murder.

nightlight, that shelter name sounds familiar. Our trip started at Dicks' Creek Gap and headed north. The scenario I described was probably around the NC border. The shady guys said they were from Kentucky, if memory serves. Our group varied from mid 20's to mid 30's in age. I think the ladies we ran into were a mother daughter. Very small world if that was indeed you.

I just looked up that Muskrat is jsut north of the NC border. If the March 02 timeframe sounds right then it was us.

Also, considering the guys age, you'd have to guess this isn't the first time he's done something like this. I wonder if other crimes will also be brought to light and cases closed.
