missing hiker on blood mountain
I happen to live in this area...and by the way I don't hear that Indiana's got a lot on Georgia as far as the gene pool is concerned. I have spent significant time on blood mountain and have never encountered any problems but it is very isolated when tourists aren't around. There are shady characters all over and hiking or backpacking alone ANYWHERE anymore unfortunately is not wise or realistic. DON'T YOU PEOPLE WATCH THE NEWS?

So is this two different hikers on the same Blood Mountain or two different hikers on two different Blood Mountains?

More bad #&%!$ happens in the mall parking lot than happens on the trail.

I hate to think I need to be packing heat to go to JC Pennys

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ Omaha's police chief says it lasted "a very
few minutes.''

But when a shooting rampage at a busy mall was over, nine people
were dead and five others wounded.

3:20PM
Hundreds of people remain in Westroads mall which remains on lock down at this hour. 250 people are reported as hold up in the basement of JC Penny with dozens more in department stores throughout the mall.

The most dangerous animal one will encounter in the woods is another human. They are completely unpredictable. There are crazies everywhere.

I think that's why most backpackers/hikers carry "heat" (The ones that do...)....not to fight off the wild animals....but to defend themselves against other humum beings (If you can call them that.).

but how often does this actually happen?

Maybe a few times a year, maybe not so severe, but conflict on the trail is common. There are people that wander up there, stealing packs, and doing terrible things. Make sure to know how to handle situations, and never go solo.

I have to disagree. I do not believe that conflict on the trail is common. I am notg saying it doesn't happen; I just don't believe it is common. I've been backpacking on the AT and many other trails over the past 8 years and I have never experienced any kind of conflict. I have backpacked solo and in groups. Nor do I frequently read about conflict on the trail or hear people say they have experienced conflict on the trail.

I had an incident where some other hikers refused to call off their dogs, which were growling and barking at me. The hikers (@ssholes I call them...) just giggled, smiled and laughed until I pointed my hiking poles at their dogs. The dogs were about a yard from me...any closer I would've poked them.... Finally the hikers (Just casual hikers because they were wearing jeans...and didn't have any waterproof gear on them...) called their dogs back to them.

Another time mountain bikers coming towards me almost knocked me over...instead of going abit slower or moving abit over...they were cursing at me. I had to get out of their way...

Btw, I carry "heat" when I backpack....

This is in no way saying that hikers with dogs and mt. bikers are all @ssholes.....I've met alot of them who are very decent.

Never any conflict hiking. Have heard of several instances in the area where vehicles were broken into at remote trailheads. On the other hand I have had / witnessed alot of conflict paddling. This was mainly attributed to people drinking at the creek.
I hike with heat as protection against two legged critters. Mainly a solo hiker.

Lots of cars vandalized and broken into at trailheads around here.
