by sea or by land, that is the question.

if one was to say run away, should this person go on a kayaking trip or a backpacking trip?

Good question! I am planning a Feb. trip somewhere. Canoe / camping trip thru the Black Swamp or backpack somewhere.

When running away, kayak...you don't leave tracks so they can not find you.

I'da thunk just the opposite GNM. It's not hot outside go hike! If you fall in the water in winter you'll get hypothermia!

I am contemplating a visit to a swamp in the delta region of Arkansas. Winter seems like a great time..no snakes or bugs. anywhere else, I agree winter = hiking.

Trick question. If you're "running away" you can't be in a kayak.

Well it's kinda hard to run with a pack on also!

You've been in the West too long Roam..how can you forget the skeeters! around here kayaking honestly is great year round..but in summer those skeeters in the swamp will pick you up and fly away at dusk and dawn. Winter...no problemo.

And wetsuits work well now adays...although still wouldn't wanna take a dip in Winter...it can be quite pleasurable with the right gear.

Hey GnM, I have plans, over time of course, to circumnavigate Lake Superior by kayak. You'll have to make one of the trips. (or two)

A combination of the two would be great.

Call me a wimpy southerner, but I'd rather have cold, wet hiking over cold, wet kayaking. And wind can take all the fun out of kayaking but doesn't take the fun out of hiking. I don't think I've been in my boat since October.

I don't pick them up, they're just naturally attracted to me. A curse, I know, but I manage to survive.
