Hey Y'all, I'm leaving for the trail soon but need to swing by the grocery store and grab some grub. Anybody got a fav trail dinner/lunch that requires no cooking? I'm not even bringing a match on this one.

sounds tasty Bryan. Not sure how well it would keep in 50* temps though. I forgot to mention that. It needs to keep well.

beef sticks sound good. cheese too. I can't stand gorp. I have a bunch of sport beans, some cliff bars, a bagel and plan on getting some of the precooked bacon. Combo's sound good too...

damnit. this is why I always bring too much food.

pepper jack would be good for this trip. Something spicy to keep the blood flowing.

another vote for what backpackerbryan said...however I still like mine warmed up in the lid of my pot a little. I always make them on kayak trips cause I'm just not toting a jar of anything while backpacking..you could use a squeeze bottle though for the sauce if you wanna try lighter weight.

and the turkey pepperonie by hormel is killer...and better for ya

There's always the PBJ, tuna, chicken salad pitas, crackers, that sort of thing. Cheese is always a winner.

check the vegetarian section of the grocery store for powdered hummus - homemade is better but the powdered-just-add-water-stuff is great on impromptu trips

Hey WC! That pic of Galeairy lake in you profile is incredible! Is that sunset or aurora borealis? Was it modified?

cook-free: tuna in foil pack, two or three mayonnaise packets (add relish pack if you prefer), crackers, individual serving Pringles, pudding cup.

just came back from ghetto(K) mart.
kept it simple and just got some beef sticks, sliced pepper jack, honey roasted peanuts, and some sunflower seeds. Like there was a lot ot choose from anyway.

This is a super UL trip, but I'm gonna try that pizza thing later on!

Est weight for this WITH 2L of water is a bit under 20lbs. That's my lightest winter one nighter yet! Cool!

thanks meangrean... it was as I saw it at sunset - I wish it was the Aurora but most of those that I see are predominantly green

the sunset was followed by a few days of really nasty weather

My publisher actually used it on the front of my cookbook too (they had so many to choose from and I was a little surprised) - I thought was great as it was one of the first wilderness camping trips we took with the little guy after we adopted him. What can I say? I'm overtly sentimental.

I thought they were mostly green, but the sky was so full of color, I thought it could have been that instead of the sun. Very impressive. Good story w it too!

Thinkbubelz & I go with thing such as:

Babybel cheese, triscuit crackers & canned or foil pack of oysters... Trail mix, fruit leather, jerky, or PBJ is always good, too. :-)

Sounds like a good selection MG. While I like the taste of beef jerky better than beef sticks, jerky doesn't offer many calories per ounce.

For next time I suggest Italian dry salami - it packs more calories per ounce than almost any meat stuff and some of it is really tasty. The Buseto brand that a lot of supermarkets carry is pretty good, but Italian Delis have some great stuff.

I like sunflower seeds for backpacking. I'm also a big fan of nuts. Macadamia nuts are incredibly weight efficient, a great thing to eat before going to be on a cold night - burning those fat calories will help keep you warm.

I nearly bought an avocado to eat once I got to camp tonight for the fat calories, but then remembered that I didn't even bring a pocket knife! That is a real rarity for me.

I like the way you think Ped. I'm always trying to figure out what are the most efficient things to pack. Thanks for the Salami idea. I'll look for that in the future. Macadamia's are awesome but expensive. Maybe I can get someone to bring me some fresh from HI next time I talk to a pilot going that way.

They sell precooked rice. Chicken in foil pack and lots of hot sauce or sweet and sour sauce.

Cookies, brocolli, carrots, jerky, crackers, apples, oranges, MRE, nuts, avacodo, Captain Crunch, protein power, Cherry tomatoes, pretzels....

When do you want me to stop?
