Just posted a trip page for a Mt. Marcy climb on Jan 19th if anyone is interested. I'm in the area on a business trip and decided to get some climbing in. Would be very interested in hearing about the mid-Dec trip some of you did.

I was just up in Lake Placid over New Years. There's a good snowpack and snowshoes will be a must.

If you're leaving from the Loj, just follow the Van Hoevenberg trail. The trail should be broken out unless it snows the night before. Round trip it will be about 14.8 miles.

That was the plan Lumber. Just bought some new snowshoes and can't wait to give em' a whirl. It was 62 degrees in Chicago today - no more snow. Can't wait for this trip. How good was the trail marked when you were there?

I didn't make it up for the December trip; in fact I think everyone bailed on it. The Van Hoevenberg Highway (trail) is probably the most used trail in the park. It is very well marked and the only place you might run into some problems is after you break treeline as the blazes painted on the bedrock will be covered in snow. The rock cairns should still be visible, but there will almost certainly be a snowshoe track to follow.

All the trail junctions in the area are clearly marked.

Thanks Lumber - no interest in coming? Any good camp recommendations?
