I lost 15 lbs up until Christmas (down to 160) and then gained 10 from then through New Years. A 10lb fluctuation in my weight over 2 weeks is common for me.

I've actually been _losing_ weight lately. Four meals a day is just keeping me the same; my damn ribs are showing!

I'm thinking I'll gain back the weight in 08 that I lost at the end of 07. Tonsilectomys are hard on a girl.

I was going to make a corny joke invovlving "fatback" but thought better of it...

Ick. Tonsillitis is no fun. I remember one winter as a child I had that and or strep about 5 or 6 times. I ended up very close to having my tonsils removed. Good to here you're feeling better.

I finally got down to pre-baby weight in 2007, then gained fifteen pounds over the course of six weeks after I got my leg squished. The inactivity combined with a bit of depression over yet another accident was a double whammy. But, I walked 5 1/2 miles today and have been doing pilates 3x a week for 30min. Hoping to get rid of that weight soon. It never seems to come off as fast as it goes on does it?

April of 2006 I lost 44 pounds in 4.5 months. Totally changed my lifestyle and food habits. Fast forward to Jan 2008, I've kept it all off and I'm going for that last elusive 4 lbs. I hope to be a fit 182lbs by May.

Good luck to everyone trying.

I once weighed in at 220lbs but dropped a quick 40lbs in 4 months and now I'm down to 168lbs - right where I should be at 5'11. When you start, looking at the scale daily is a huge motivator - once you lose that first 5-10lbs it's motivating and looking at a scale daily won't allow you to put on a 'surprise' 5-10lbs. You'll catch any small increase and get pissed. A steady increase in activity, eating smaller portions, drinking tons of water, and pulling back on the partying did it for me.

Oh, lifting weights has a longer after burn than cardio and can help you lose faster if incorporated into your routine.

Good luck!

I think I stayed about the same throughout '07. I lost about 7 pounds while on the JMT, but gradually gained it back over the ensuing 2 months.

Mostly, I want to extend a most sincere THANK YOU to mapes, who is the first person in a looooooong time to figure out the correct spelling is indeed "losing" and not "loosing." Thank you!

I'm in. I need to lose 15 lbs to get to pre baby weight. I had lost another 4 before Christmas, but gained it back very very quickly!

Gotta get me some exercise....

Have been pretty stable over the past year, but I'm getting back into the work-out groove for 2008. Hope to be back close to my college weight by June!

Whenever I read a thread titled "loosing weight" I picture all these recently released fat cells floating around the air, waiting for someone to attach themselves to. I want to yell "no, take 'em back!"

article:
For Weight Control You Will Need To Walk More Than 10,000 Steps A Day

Women:
 Age - Steps per day
18-40     12,000
40-50     11,000
50-60     10,000
60-            8,000

Men:
 Age - Steps per day
18-50   12,000
50-        11,000

Last time I measured my pace (and it's been a While), it was like 2.5 feet.... so 12,000 paces would be like 5.7 miles.

HMmmm.

We just got an elliptical, I'm not saying how much, but yikes...it's delivered on tuesday or wednesday. I guess I can say I've paid the price now. :P

here is another way to look at this... you burn .67*your body weight/mile in calories while walking/running. if you need to walk 10,000 steps (5.7 miles per day) to maintain your weight then this means you are eating an extra 4500-5000 calories more than your metabolic requirements. if you ate like this BEFORE you started walking 10,000 steps per day you would be gaining weight at a rate of 1 lb/week (52 lbs/year). that would be pretty rapid weight gain... so i find this study hard to believe. it's probably been written to sell pedometers.

you burn less calories/mile on the elliptical because more of your stride's energy is returned to you. it's a lot easier on your joints, however, so you can perhaps exercise longer and more consistently. these things were a lifesaver for me when i broke my foot and could not run. enjoy!

The trainer at our gym told me to not hang on when on the elliptical machine. It makes a HUGE difference. The core muscles and knees get strengthened markedly.

calorie burn
according to the Precor Treadmill at the gym today:

As a 43 y.o. male, weighing 155 lbs:

I ran for 45 minutes at a just sub 9 minute pace (5.1 miles)

it told me I burned 660 calories.

So if that is accurate . . . it comes back down to eating moderately.

speaking of people being sick...

today i put on my harness in the rock gym and it wouldn't tighten. i looked and noticed that there was no more adjustment... the belt could not be pulled any tighter... and the harness would almost go over my hips.

first this sucks because i love this harness.

i asked the guy i climb with if i had lost weight. he has me on the end of a rope and catches me on falls so he would know. he laughed at me and said something like, "hell yes why do you think you have been making so much progress?"

ok, well that makes sense -except- i have not been doing anything to lose weight.

on one hand i am thinking that i have been somewhat more active the last 4 months and to be glad this is working out.

on the other hand i am wondering if i have a tapeworm or something.

i'll prolly go see my doctor but i know he'll send me in for all sorts of REALLY not-so-nice tests.

One cheeseburger isn't all that bad. When I last had one 6 months ago, it was one of the best I ever eaten.

By the time I got back to the car in the parking lot, I had walked it all off any ways, so it's like no big deal.
