Best hat to protect face from sun?

“Any feedback from the easily-sunburned on which hats work well to protect the face from the sun, yet are practical for backpacking? I'm not quite ready to start wearing a bonnet on the trail, but another sunburn may send me over the edge.”

some look shorter than they really are. a friend of mine has had numerous cancers removed from his ears and neck and few small ones on his face. He wears his tilley everywhere now.”

On a 2001 trip to the Grand Canyon, we forgot our hats, so we found some cheap straw hats like this one below for about $5-10 at a local K-Mart. It's cheap and lightweight and covers a large amount of area because of the broad rim. We came home on 09/09 and 2 days later 09/11 happened.... We still have the hats. I use mine when gardening and he uses his when mowing in the summer).

Kidding. I recently started wearing a mil surplus boonie hat. I believe the one I have is a lightweight nylon one as opposed to the cotton jobs you see at discount stores.

An added bonus is that no one can see your head when you're in the woods.”

“Never seen it on sale. Love the vent, too. I dropped it on the trail in February and hiked back a mile and a half the next morning in 0F temps to find it. I wasnt wearing it when it fell from my pack - turns out the vent is too drafty in those temps, LOL.”

“for the colder days I use a polypro hat liner - works well for me - its sort of a thin light weight beanie that can be pulled down to cover the tops of the ears”

“In this case it was in the teens the evening before when we were hiking, cold enough I was wearing my full balaclava. A hat liner probably wouldn't have been enough - cold ears, cold neck, etc. I'll have to look into one for cooler trips, though.”
