Best hat to protect face from sun? “Any feedback from the easily-sunburned on which hats work well to protect the face from the sun, yet are practical for backpacking? I'm not quite ready to start wearing a bonnet on the trail, but another sunburn may send me over the edge.” 5:51:13 PM 1/07/08 “have you checked into the Tilley hats?” 5:51:54 PM 1/07/08 “I've seen hats worn by salt water fisherman that have unusually long brims. I'll try to find ya a link.” 5:55:19 PM 1/07/08 “Just did a search and the one I'm thinking of IS a Tilley hat. Some just have longer brims and zip off neck shades.” 5:58:10 PM 1/07/08 “Which hat is it - do you have a link? The ones I've seen so far have pretty short brims.” 5:59:13 PM 1/07/08 “http://www.tilley.com/home.asp?countryCode=US some look shorter than they really are. a friend of mine has had numerous cancers removed from his ears and neck and few small ones on his face. He wears his tilley everywhere now.” 6:01:44 PM 1/07/08 “There are a few other links on the page: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0053332955552a&navCount=1&podId=0053332&parentId=cat110002&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat20431-cat110002&catalogCode=IJ&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat110002&hasJS=true” 6:01:51 PM 1/07/08 “Just did a search and the one I'm thinking of IS a Tilley hat. Bess should look at it. last edited: 1/07/08 7:34:46 PM” 7:30:20 PM 1/07/08 “I would. I actually have a similar style hat, but it's black. edit - not your kavu hat, but the other one you posted. last edited: 1/07/08 7:35:39 PM” 7:34:19 PM 1/07/08 “ ![]() THE CANADIAN - This cold-weather cap features a helmet of fine Canadian bacon and a chin-strap of sausage links. Just as their dense flesh protects pigs through the harsh Canadian winters, this hat keeps your head warm in the coldest of climates. ![]() THE COW-BOY HAT - This American classic, made of the best marbleized cuts of beef available, assures that you won’t just herd cattle, you’ll wear them. With this beauty, the cows are always on your mind.” 7:38:44 PM 1/07/08 “y'all are so funny..LMAO..ya dorks!” 7:39:56 PM 1/07/08 “Tilley hats are the BOMB! I have had one for years, been through everything with it. Personally I wouldn't want any other hat.” 5:16:33 AM 1/08/08 5:46:38 AM 1/08/08 “I have one of these hats--it has a wide brim, and there is mesh on the top part so that your head doesn't get over heated... :-) ![]() On a 2001 trip to the Grand Canyon, we forgot our hats, so we found some cheap straw hats like this one below for about $5-10 at a local K-Mart. It's cheap and lightweight and covers a large amount of area because of the broad rim. We came home on 09/09 and 2 days later 09/11 happened.... We still have the hats. I use mine when gardening and he uses his when mowing in the summer). ”11:55:40 AM 1/08/08 “My wife lost her tilley to deer on our last backpack. She had had that thing for 10 years and was pretty upset. Damn deer...” 12:06:44 PM 1/08/08 “BTW-- the Columbia hat I had was from REI...” 12:16:50 PM 1/08/08 “its waterproof! ”11:51:56 AM 1/09/08 “your new trailname would be "buckethead"” 12:00:25 PM 1/09/08 “I burn pretty bad and I've recently started wearing SUN BLOCK! Kidding. I recently started wearing a mil surplus boonie hat. I believe the one I have is a lightweight nylon one as opposed to the cotton jobs you see at discount stores. An added bonus is that no one can see your head when you're in the woods.” 1:46:25 PM 1/09/08 “Get a bimini for your backpack.” 1:49:06 PM 1/09/08 “Ive had that Columbia hat pinkbublz posted for years. Goes everywhere with me, great for trail and beach. http://www.rei.com/product/646963” 7:12:24 PM 1/09/08 “techntrek.... yup, it's a great hat. not too hot because of the vents-- sometimes it even goes on sale at REI. :-)” 3:27:23 PM 1/10/08 “Never seen it on sale. Love the vent, too. I dropped it on the trail in February and hiked back a mile and a half the next morning in 0F temps to find it. I wasnt wearing it when it fell from my pack - turns out the vent is too drafty in those temps, LOL.” 7:07:51 PM 1/10/08 “for the colder days I use a polypro hat liner - works well for me - its sort of a thin light weight beanie that can be pulled down to cover the tops of the ears” 4:39:59 AM 1/11/08 “In this case it was in the teens the evening before when we were hiking, cold enough I was wearing my full balaclava. A hat liner probably wouldn't have been enough - cold ears, cold neck, etc. I'll have to look into one for cooler trips, though.” 11:05:58 AM 1/11/08 5:43:04 AM 1/15/08
