ATLANTA — Authorities found the body of a missing hiker Monday, hours after a judge denied bond to the man accused of kidnapping her in the mountains of northern Georgia.

A source close to the investigation, who was not authorized to speak publicly and requested anonymity, said the remains of 24-year-old Meredith Emerson had been found. The disclosure came after authorities scheduled a "major announcement" in the case in Dawson County, south of where Gary Michael Hilton, 61, appeared in court.

Investigators are examining whether Emerson's death and the disappearance of two other hikers in October in North Carolina are related.

Hilton's attorney, Neil Smith, did not enter a plea on Hilton's behalf Monday.

Investigators say Hilton was the last person seen with Emerson on the trail before she disappeared on New Year's Day.

Lets just say she did not die easy, sorry but in that case I see NOTHING wrong with ANY method of interrogation. So he has MS or whatever I guess I look at the innocent surviors too much. There are times I would love to see some Government Officer come on and say that somehow the scum "escaped and disappeared" then a few hours later the scum would wake up in a basement somewhere seeing that announcement. “catching up on the news of this terrible story this morning. i have been asked what my biggest fear is solo hiking. people are scared of wild animals or getting injured and unable to get out. i tell them i am afraid of people way more than animals or getting hurt but that after you get a few miles into the backcountry even this fades because most won't go that far into the sticks. i guess rethinking all of this in light of this tragedy i would have to say that dangerous people that in fact can and will go back into the backcountry are now my biggest fear when solo hiking. it's really sad when even you have to give up even this level of security in the world today. i still think this is a very, very unusual and rare thing, but when you think of the crowds of people in some of these places like the red and the scores of locals of all types i guess the backcountry really isn't all that much of a "filter", is it? not really to a determined predator.”

“as the economy worsens, more and more people are going to be taking refuge in the deep woods. I'm not sure that will increase the danger proportionately... but it will no doubt have an effect at some level. People got to live somewhere and most folks on the run are not too happy being found.”

Backpacking's heyday is long since past, and I haven't noticed any significant increase in the 12 or so years that I've been bp'ing.
