Three Rivers Petroglyph site is nearby and is really cool if you are into that kinda thing.
I love White Sands for photography.

Go to the north side of Ruidoso. Monjeau lookout from the road to the ski place (or anywhere on the road to the ski place), or up Rio Bonito - South Fork campground is a good starting point.

Trip Report....Not good..
Made the drive to Inn of the Mountain Gods...The Mescalero Apache Indian tribe is 10 dollars richer....(I an NOT a gambler). Left the Casino, and drove up to the North to the snow line, made a snowball, and turned around. (I was in Blue Jeans, Steel Toes and a cotton Sweatshirt covered by a nylon windbreaker)...not dressed to hike or climb, but the view was fantastic.

Started out good, ended Very Badly.

On the way back to Tularosa, down US 70, I viewed a single car accident...a bad one. The lone female driver did not survive...she was wearing a seatbelt, but the crash was through the median, she over corrected, off the right side of the road, with an end over end. She was pinned under the edge of the front passenger side door, neck broken. I reached in through the drivers side door and turned off the ignition, then called 911..and got a RECORDING. Hung up, dialed again, got the RECORDING. let the growing crowd make the call, and picked up her cell phone to check for ICE (Please code the name and number of the person you would like called IN CASE OF EMERGENCY...ICE) the code is growing in recognition.

I found the number for her house, labled simply; Home.

Can't describe the feeling of making a call not knowing her name, or the name of her husband....having to ask cold...who am I speaking to?...

Decision to call or not.. I'm not a medical professional, although I've seen my share of dead and wounded. She was dead, no doubt to me, but not my call. As a husband, I would want to be there if I could..it might be the last I saw my wife alive, the last chance to tell her how much I love her...I had to do it....

Today I saw a grizzled old Hispanic Man go to his knees on a highway....

9 January 2008; my own wife's birthday...I had just hung up from singing "Happy Birthday" to her on the phone......After I had left the scene, I called her back, interrupted her at work, and told her again how much she means to me...

then called 911..and got a RECORDING. Hung up, dialed again,,,

..emergency services can be lacking in Southern N.M. I had to wait an hour for my own rollover right outside Las Cruces. Too bad you had to experience that since this area has much to offer.
