“Here's my pics from the Mt Washington winter climb this past weekend.

It was a great winter day on Mt Washington. Lots of snow, but the temps were mild for Washington, and the winds "only" hit around 50-60 mph on the summit. Myself, Crazypace, Swampy, and Precision made it to the summit.

My best hiking buddy has moved. It has been two Novembers since we've done our traditional (16 years or more)ADK or White Mountains "almost winter" backpack.

I still get out myself and with other friends, and with my kids . ..

but boy . .. .

I know that climb can be a buttkicker in good weather, let alone winter conditions. The approach alone is over 3 miles....
How was the winter route, and where did it meet up with the summer Lions head?”

Coco - I don't know the summer route having never climbed Washington from Pinkham before, but I'll fathom a guess. When the Tuck's wide trail came to a T, we turned right, heading towards the Harvard Cabin, and then turned left up a narrow trail. Maybe that's the winter route? If so, it was narrow, making passing difficult. The travelling wasn't too difficult though. There was lots of snow but it was well packed. It got fairly steep with a few scrambles to deal with, but nothing technical.”

“Ski resort, but I have no idea which one or what mountain that is. I do know that was south of Mt. Washington.”

“The ski area is Wildcat mountain.

It is due East/northeast of Washington.

The parking lots are just north of Pinkham notch, on the opposite side of the road.



The view South of the Summitt would be off towards Bretton Woods ski area. Not sure how visible it is from the summitt.



The Wildcat/Carter range is a group of 4000 foot peaks. A little less traveled, great views back towards wshington.


Wildcat can be a bear to ski. It is rugged, not as much grooming (back in the day) and it can be brutally cold weather wise. It gets everything Washington doesn't block.”

The ski area. From where did you take that picture? Were you on Lion's head, looking straight out (back in the direction of your ascent/descent?). If so, you were facing East and its Wildcat.

If it is from the summitt (although the terrain would seem to be more in keeping with the Alpine garden than the sumitt) and you were facing the side of the mountain that the Cog RR descends, (not the side where it arrives)it could be Bretton woods.”

“That's definately the Wildcat ski area in our pics, taken near Lion's Head and looking east. There was very little pic taking on the summit cuz of the wind.

Note that I used quotations marks around fun. There's the stream crossing at the very beginning and then it's steep as hell.

Nhiker - I didn't notice the moon. It could have been massive. I am not always the most attentive one around.”

I'm toying with going to Cater Notch hut, and bagging the Wildcats, via the ridge trail, but then again up and down the slopes would be a LOT shorter/easier esp with all the snow

“Coco - a few of us stayed at Carter Hut on New Year's weekend a few years ago. We had a blast. We dayhiked 3 days while at the Hut, did a few of the Carters (Carter Dome twice), and the Wildcats. It was nice turning around at the last Cat, thus avoiding the "fun" part.”
