Couldn't it be said then, that they left the Democratic party not because of views on racial issues, but because they wanted to stay in power?

And so far in this election year the only accusations I've seen involving race as an issue with the candidates are those leveled at Bill Clinton, a white southern democrat whose wife is in a nasty primary battle with a black man. It seems that the enormous popularity he has enjoyed is taking a hit because of his willingness to make off-hand remarks about Obama's race as a factor in the primaries.

It's not modern day republicans "eating up the Clinton thing", it's the media. As far as I know, none of the Republican candidates for president have mentioned the friction between obama's camp and hilary's over Bill's comments about race, or Hilary's comments about MLK--comments which seemed to marginalize his efforts, according to some. If you turn on (or read) the news in the past week though, it's been everywhere.

Anyway, as usual I've managed to start steering a topic off course, and I have to get to bed early tonight, so I'll try to check for a response tomorrow night.
