Taxes are like a stick. The guy whacking us with the stick may change, he may whack some harder than others and the stick may be bigger for some than others but in the end we all get whacked. The stick should be the same size for everyone and we should all get whacked with the same force.

Overtaxing one sector of the population more than another is discrimination and it is wrong. I don't care what end of the scale they are on. It's wrong.

i can't help but wonder about the logic of a petrolium company windfall tax... if the airlines have shown us anything it's that added cost of any business gets pushed out to the consumer. so the government passes a windfall tax on the profits of these companies and does whatever it does with the money... but the oil companies are just going to add this to the "bottom line" and distribute the charge out to their customers (us) so it's really not much more than a broad-based tax increase not on the rich but on the people that use the most fuel. that doesn't just mean consumers driving cars, even though it would hit those terrible suv drivers... it will hit everything... like the airlines that already pass these expenses on to their consumers (fuel surcharge, baggage fees, etc, etc).

i think in the end the government needs X dollars to function and so long as X doesn't change than changing the tax code won't really change much of anything. you have to change the pattern of consumption before you can change the pattern of production.

...and that goes for getting rid of the gasoline tax as well. get rid of the tax and the money it produced will have to come from somewhere since nobody changed what the money it produced is being spent on.

politicians have gotten good at making promises that, even if they deliver on them, don't really change anything.

i am beginning to think that the only way out is for the government to basically take control of the petrolium industry as a matter of national interest. it's inefficent as hell but the fact that it's so profitable means that there are already all sorts of inefficent behaviors (wildcard expensive speculation exploration/drilling, etc).

I wonder if we will see some regulation of oil commodities trading in the near future.

I also wonder what the price of gas would be if we have another Hurricane Rita.

you have to change the pattern of consumption before you can change the pattern of production.

Simple demand has a lot to do with it. In the past America has always been the #1 consumer for oil but China and India will soon over take us in that department. The other factor is the ability to supply the oil. We haven't built a new refinery in 37 years. We can't extract the oil we do have. It's no wonder we're in the shytter.

The government has a hard on for the oil companies. They are claiming windfall profits to the oil companies as if the oil companies are over charging us on purpose which has been shown again and again to not be the case. The oil companies' profit margin is only 9.7%. The S&P 500 average is 8.5% so it is not like they are gouging. Hedge fund profit margins are in the high 80%. Why not go after them? Here's a nice list of other things that earn higher profits than oil....

* healthcare facilities? 48%.
* Publishing, periodicals, magazines is 34%.
* Information delivery services, 23%.
* Silver is 22%.
* Application software industry is 22%.
* Shipping, 21%. Well, not anymore.
* Copper is 19%.
* Tobacco products, 19%.
* Drug manufacturers, 17%.
* Insurance brokers, 16.
* Beverages, wineries, distilleries, 15%.
* Long distance carriers, 15.8%.
* railroads, 13.9%.
* Steel and iron, 13.8.
* Cigarettes, 13.7.
* Integrated circuits, semiconductors, 13.6.
* Money center banks, 10.8.
* Hotel/motels, 10.6.
* Asset management, 10.5.
* Beverage, Brewers, 10.5.
* Resorts and casinos are 10.5.

So why go after oil companies because of a problem the government created?

If Gore had any guts, he would have come out with his support before Obama became the presumptive nominee.

Perhaps Gore had the good grace to stay neutral until after the nomination was decided so as not to offend his former boss and his old lady.

Gore is a phony just like Obama. In the year since Al Gore took steps to make his home more energy-efficient, the former Vice President’s home energy use surged more than 10%. It is no wonder why Gore lost his home state to Bush. And the Tennessee voters will remember that when they go vote for McCain this fall.

"the democrats always support the democrats..."

“I have worked with John McCain for many years in the U.S. Senate and know from experience that he can unite Democrats, Republicans and Independents like no one else in this country. He did it in the United States Senate and he can do it as President of the United States.” Who wrote that? None other that the former Democratic nominee for Vice President of the United States, who not only has wholeheartedly endorsed McCain, but he is fundraising and campaigning for him.

A Wisconsin Democratic delegate to the Democratic Convention this summer has openly said she is going to vote for McCain.

Droves of "elite Jewish Democratic donors" are fleeing the Democratic Party and are openly supporting McCain with money.

Retired Democratic Congressman Tim Penny of Minnesota has openly endorsed McCain.

Muslims barred from picture at Obama event

Two Muslim women at Barack Obama’s rally in Detroit on Monday were barred from sitting behind the podium by campaign volunteers seeking to prevent the women’s headscarves from appearing in photographs or on television with the candidate.

The campaign has apologized to the women, both Obama supporters who said they felt betrayed by their treatment at the rally.

“This is of course not the policy of the campaign. It is offensive and counter to Obama’s commitment to bring Americans together and simply not the kind of campaign we run,” said Obama spokesman Bill Burton. “We sincerely apologize for the behavior of these volunteers.”

Building a human backdrop to a political candidate, a set of faces to appear on television and in photographs, is always a delicate exercise in demographics and political correctness. Advance staffers typically pick supporters out of a crowd to reflect the candidate’s message.

When Obama won the North Carolina primary amid questions about his ability to connect with white voters, for instance, he stood in front of a group of middle-aged white women waving small American flags.

Who Is Barack Obama????

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From: [Redacted]
To: [Redacted]
Subject: WHO IS BARACK OBAMA?

There are many things people do not know about BARACK OBAMA. It is every American's duty to read this message and pass it along to all of their friends and loved ones.

Barack Obama wears a FLAG PIN at all times. Even in the shower.

Barack Obama says the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE every time he sees an American flag. He also ends every sentence by saying, "WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL." Click here for video of Obama quietly mouthing the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE in his sleep.

A tape exists of Michelle Obama saying the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE at a conference on PATRIOTISM.

Every weekend, Barack and Michelle take their daughters HUNTING.

Barack Obama is a PATRIOTIC AMERICAN. He has one HAND over his HEART at all times. He occasionally switches when one arm gets tired, which is almost never because he is STRONG.

Barack Obama has the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE tattooed on his stomach. It's upside-down, so he can read it while doing sit-ups.

There's only one artist on Barack Obama's iPod: FRANCIS SCOTT KEY.

Barack Obama is a DEVOUT CHRISTIAN. His favorite book is the BIBLE, which he has memorized. His name means HE WHO LOVES JESUS in the ancient language of Aramaic. He is PROUD that Jesus was an American.

Barack Obama goes to church every morning. He goes to church every afternoon. He goes to church every evening. He is IN CHURCH RIGHT NOW.

Barack Obama's new airplane includes a conference room, a kitchen, and a MEGACHURCH.

Barack Obama's skin is the color of AMERICAN SOIL.

Barack Obama buys AMERICAN STUFF. He owns a FORD, a BASEBALL TEAM, and a COMPUTER HE BUILT HIMSELF FROM AMERICAN PARTS. He travels mostly by FORKLIFT.

Barack Obama says that Americans cling to GUNS and RELIGION because they are AWESOME.

he can't change what he can't control. the reality is that you can't get elected president if you don't do this and if you can't get elected president you can't change anything. it's just a sad reality. so long as he doesn't swiftboat the election i'll be content on this topic.

I guess the fact that he is going back on his word isn't a problem.

I would hope he (and you) will remember this when McCain, or some other Republican, changes his mind about something. But I must confess, I'm not counting on it.
