Non-partisan in what demented universe, Nigel?   Looks like somebody can't grasp the obvious to save their ass.

Here it is AGAIN -------------

"AFFT's plan to pass the FairTax is to educate the masses on the FairTax and stir a massive grassroots movement of volunteer activism to pressure their congressmen to support the FairTax."

------------ from THEIR website.

("Astroturf" for the masses)

It'll never pass, and these guys know it.   They're just looking to get another tax cut so they'll go away ---- like filing a bogus lawsuit (knowing exactly how bogus it is) just to get the other party to settle so they'll STFU for awhile.

It'll pay in the end... for them.

If you want to screw yourselves over, that's fine by me. Just write 'em a check and leave us out of it.

poor people spend nearly all of their income on taxable items and a small portion (if any) on investments. rich people spend a small portion of their income on taxable items and a larger portion on investments (stocks, bonds, 401k, etc.) the "fair tax" adds up to a reduction in the tax rate of the rich at the expense of the poor.

Quick Question on Economics
So jimmy when these people INVEST their money....where does it go?

If say I get an investment in ABC Chemicals and buy stock...what happens to the money?

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM?

Now contrary to what you and...sadly the Beverly Hillbillies thought the money is not stored in a big VAULT for distribution. Rather it is INVESTED in the company.

See this money is normally used by the company to improve the company, thus creating more jobs (either directly or indirectly by the company). Now you may not realize but no one really has this BIG POT of money they reach into, most money is in investments.

Most poor people spend their money on investments like "THE BIG LOTTO" (LOL). Sorry but they are poor becuase they pursue activities that keep them there.

This is evident by the examples of people of limited means who manage through hard work to GET OUT of the environment. Additionally the fact that the Large Majority of "evil Millionaires" are usually first generation seems to indicate that it is not the "evil rich families" as you and your leech squad would have society believe.

Taxes, taxes...

Back the issue of this thread: Obama.

Yes, he freaks the right out and I love every minute of it. I think they are completely bent out of shape at the pull this guy is having on the American population, moderate righties as well. I don't buy the whole, let's all get along message. That's never been the case in politics and I don't buy that hooey for a second. But whatever makes people feel good.

Hillary evokes quite the reaction as well and for these reasons, thus far, the election on the left has been exciting vs. the right which is exhibiting the same old white guy tired storyline.

I think moderate voters will vote for the left just so they won't be bored into a doldrum during State of the Unions by Mr. Dynamic, McCain.

Some of you will not like a consumer unfriendly tax. You may not be on airplanes as much and have huge mortgages or drive 100's of miles to work. Your church and favorite charity may disappear and more than anything else you will have to pay for what you get.

I don't know how it works with the "Fair Tax," but the charities were freaking the hell out when Steve was on his demented clown tour hawking the flat version.

How much would people donate if it was no longer deductible?

Back to Obama..... I don't think he's a "Fair Tax"er.

What would be the incentive to work enough to cross the threshold where you're paying 20% versus 10%? You'd make less money! That encourages people to work less hard. Sounds like a great system for a non-American to promote in America. That way, his home country can have a better chance to outdo America.

Hell, the people with Real Money run the tax system,    LMAO     I like the one about how the Gallos (of jug wine fame) spread 2 million around DC and got custom inheritance tax legislation to pass 102 million down from granddad tax free.   That's what you call one hellacious return on investment.

According to Johnston, when the Texas Rangers were sold Bush claimed 4 million U$ of salary as a capital gain and should have been audited.

thanks for making my point Tilt. The tax system is designed to allow as many loopholes as your highly paid accountant can find, your highly paid lawyer can defend and your highly paid lobbyist can create.

Wipe away the library they call the tax code and replace it with something less complicated. Buy something, pay sales tax.

What you guys are saying is counter-intuitive.

You're saying that people capable of earning high income will sit down and cry and become less productive and maybe even end up on skid row because of higher tax rates.

Such lack of faith in people is ass-tounding.

I don't doubt that some will cry, weep and moan. But I should think that "go-getters" by their very nature would simply kick their hustle into a higher gear and make even more to cover the higher tax rate.
MarkO

Non C - The US has a tax burden which has to be paid from somewhere. We could argue that we should cut this and that from spending, but we're not really talking about that at the moment. it's related, but it's a side issue - at the moment we're talking about how it's raised.

The way we ask people to pay it is on a sliding scale related to each particualr segment of income. The first part free, next part at x% next part slightly more and so on. This distrbites the tax burden over those who are able to pay it.

If you want to shift the burden proportionately more on the poor, then at least come out and admit it, and not call it 'fair'.

A side factor of this is also that if you try and shift this balance onto the poor, consumption will go down - hitting the whole entire economy, rich and poor.

The system gives most people a chance to live their lives, buy food, heat their homes and buy the basic necessities - not sure where you think they are going to be able to pay for this increased tax you want to put on them.

but the problem to this is that you create a disincentive to consume. And we're just starting to see that consumption is the key driver of the US economy.

Y2, I know how our tax system works.

I was not advocating "fair" or flat or consumption or whatever the proposal of the day is. I wanted someone to tell me why the person who earns more should have to pay at a higher percentage rate rather than the SAME percentage rate, when the same percentage rate applied to a larger amount IS more.

The sliding percentages apply to segments of one's income, (eh Y2?) not to the entire income, as I understand it.

It looks like the pundits have some of these guys "carrying water" for the whiney upper class.

What do you call it when people promote an idea that is actually detrimental to the economic self-interest of those doing the promoting?
