Join us for a saunter up the Profile trail to Calloway Peak on Sunday. Park at Pappys on 105 up from the TH parking lot. Leave about 10:30. Temps on summit likely single digits with wind. If winds strong, chills will be minus 10 or lower. PLEASE be prepared. Crampons will be helpful, facemask + goggles also. This will be a fast hike. I hope to RT in 4 hours (7.2 miles)

I'm not far away and if the roads are decent, I will consider it.

I drove up last evening, met Joey about 7pm. I had considered hiking up the Daniel Boone scout trail but didn't want to spend an 45+ minutes driving around the mountain. Finally hit the Profile trail at 8 pm. I thought about hiking to the ridgeline but really did not want to be setting up the tent on the ridge at 10 pm, cold, windy. We made the Profile campsite (5000') by 9 pm and set up camp. Got into the tent, organized and made some hots. I guess we turned in abot 10:30 pm.

Joey got up about 4 times last night. (I wish he had just peed in his Nalgene.) He had an unpleasent night. We arose at about 7:30. I went out at 8 to check the temp, it was (as above) -5, windchill -25. We eventually got packed up and headed of the mountain. At the cars, Joey had enough and decided to go home. Fridge wasn't around so I packed up and headed to the top. Summited in about 2' 15" The trail was snowy, when the snow melts out it will be an icy path. At 1 pm the Watauga View had a temp of 10 with -18 windchill. Sauntered back down to the gap, spoke with a couple and had a trail bar. Back down to the car in 4' 30".

Went to start the car, it started but the big red STOP light came on. Oh #&%!$, thought the coolant froze up, maybe the water pump or temp sensor. As I used to live up here I called a few friends and Lisa graciously offered to let me stay with her and Tom. We had Chinese, watched the game, and found he closest VW dealer between here and my house is in Winston, 90 miles east. Thank God I have AAA deluxe.

No pics, forgot to put the camera in the sleeping bag. It may thaw out by next week. A great trip, the coldest overnight conditions I think I've ever camped in. Will be up at Rogers in 2 weeks. BTW, none of the Linville crowd made it here. You guys missed it!
