A tinker is northern UK dialect for a gypsy.

In the states a "tinker" was a traveling salesman/craftsman who went about fixing metallic objects such as pans, metal plates, lantern housings and such. He was well liked for the most part, but as most itinerants he was known to add details to his stories. The tinker became known as a wonderful purveyor of half truths.
